Cummins knows Hazlewood has picked up Root a number of times. Straight away he's got him on.
Unsurprisingly Australia have brought Josh Hazlewood straight on for Joe Root.
Modern-day cricket loves match-ups and Hazlewood has got Root eight times in Test cricket.
Can Root get off this pair?

Dawid Malan is able to let most of Pat Cummins' over go by. He has a tentative prod at one, but his bat is half hidden behind his pad so he survives.
This is going to be a very tense passage of play.

England captain Joe Root is the new batter. He is on a pair, after getting a duck in the first innings.
It'll be Dawid Malan on strike for now, though.
Australia captain Pat Cummins has immediately brought himself back into the attack.

That's stiff on Hameed. He played well. On that occasion he played outside of his body - Australia knew he'd gloved it.

That's a bonus wicket for Australia.

Gloved down the leg side!
Haseeb Hameed is really disappointed. He's got his head sloped down as he trudges off.
It is not a good delivery from Mitchell Starc, again going comfortably down the leg side, but Hameed plays away from his body and it flicks off the glove and through to Alex Carey.
A soft dismissal.

Shotttt! Four more.
Haseeb Hameed flays a cut shot through backward point for another boundary.
He's up to 27 and playing beautifully.

Mitchell Starc again strays onto the pads of Haseeb Hameed and the England opener flicks fine for four again.
The left-armer hasn't got his line right in this spell. It has either been too wide, or on the pads.
England are digging in under the watchful eye of the Queen, it seems.

A maiden from Nathan Lyon.
Haseeb Hameed and Dawid Malan have put on 30 for the second wicket now. There's been the odd scare, but they are building nicely.
They need to keep going to build confidence for the rest if the series, even if this Test is gone.

There's a good England side in there, the selectors have to just get it out. I think Crawley is a good player. I like the look of Lawrence. It's about picking the right guys and giving them the confidence to play.

This might be the end of Mitchell Starc's spell. He has only bowled two overs, but England have played him fairly comfortably.
They take eight off this over, with an Haseeb Hameed fine flick for four before more leg-side shots bring easy runs for England.

England selectors get too technical. They left Malan out saying he plays better when the ball bounces. You can either bat or you can't bat.

Good from Haseeb Hameed and Dawid Malan.
Hameed works a single into the on side, before Malan back-foot punches through a gap in the covers for a couple.
Malan does average 40.20 in Australia. Apart from the odd scare against Nathan Lyon he has looked good and relatively at home so far.

Dawid Malan blocks and leaves the remainder of Mitchell Starc's over.
He looks much more comfortable against the pace. Malan and Haseeb Hameed need to try and keep latter on strike against the spin where possible.
