Hmmm yes. I think I know which of those two options are more likely. Alastair Cook, Andrew Strauss and Jonathan Trott showed in 2010 what can be done in this situation. The problem is England don't have a top three in the same class as those three.

Josh Roberts: The fact that Starc is looking pretty comfortable against the new ball could either be a glimmer of hope for England, or even more embarrassing if (when) our top order struggles.

  3. Aus 358-7published at 87 overs

    Head 118, Starc 18

The Gabba is by no means full but those locals in the ground are cheering as Travis Head clubs the first boundary of the day.

Mitchell Starc follows that with a picture-perfect drive through the leg side.

Don't you dare go to bed. Yes you.

  4. Aus 349-7published at 86 overs

It's not the biggest issue, only one extra run, but when you're starting a new day 200 runs behind you really do not want to concede sloppy overthrows.

Haseeb Hameed is the guilty fielder. Start as you mean to go on and all that...

England have to make the most of what is left in this game, dig in when they come to bat.

There was an injury concern about Ollie Robinson late yesterday/this morning. He's fit enough to begin proceedings from the other end.

  8. Aus 347-7published at 85 overs

    Lead by 200

It's a funny one. This game will be all about survival now for England. Is any time Australia take batting just helping their cause?

Woakes doesn't look particularly thrilled as Starc inside-edges three.

England have to be careful of their over-rate. Not only might they lose heavily, but also have some money taken out of their bank accounts.

  10. Aus 344-7published at 84.4 overs

Travis Head gets his first run of the day, tucking the ball off his hip to the distant hum of Jerusalem.

The masseuse looks to have done their job on Woakes. He's not noticeably stiff after all his effort in the heat yesterday.

  11. Aus 343-7published at 23:29 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2021

Well here we go then. We've got another long night ahead. How will England fare?

Chris Woakes has the ball in hand.

Joe Root will want England to show heart and fight. If they roll over, and don't show determination, it sets a bad precedent for the series. It's also an opportunity to put into practice the gameplan and put some pressure back on Australia.

It wasn't all doom and gloom on day two. Ollie Robinson, Mark Wood and Chris Woakes all impressed.

Conditions could be the best in the match today. Brisbane can flatten out and be the best pitch to bat on later in the game.
