This XI is perfect for the previous Test, whereas the previous Test XI is perfect for this Test. Silverwood has to go.

  2. Aus 136-1published at 56 overs

More Labuschagne leaves to infuriate James Anderson.

He concludes the over by running a hand through his hair and trudging away.

  3. Aus 133-1published at 55 overs

Another tidy but, ultimately, unthreatening over from Chris Woakes.

From a purely selfish point of view, England getting a couple of wickets here would really help my energy levels. I'm on my third coffee off two hours' sleep.

Are there any 4am readers still here?

England may only get about five overs max with the new ball tonight.

  5. Aus 130-1published at 54 overs

    Warner 66, Labuschagne 53

Warner takes a single from the final ball to retain the strike. It's still quite sunny - the bowler-friendly conditions are yet to emerge.

  6. Aus 129-1published at 53.1 overs

The first ball back is solidly defended by Warner as if the break never happened.

David Warner is on strike to Jimmy Anderson.

How many times has he dug England out of trouble? Just once more, Jimmy. Please.

That being said, England haven't necessarily bowled badly. They have made Labuschagne in particular play and miss a lot, and there have been close calls.

A bit of luck this session would be great. Here come the players.

Injuries haven't helped England in this Ashes, we know that. Olly Stone and Jofra Archer would've really made a difference.

But how often has it been mentioned that England's bowling is too one-dimensional? They've gone with five right-arm seamers bowling at 80-85mph, with Warner and Labuschagne playing each of them relatively comfortably.

Should they have gone with Wood here, given his injury record? Oh, I don't know. It's too complicated.

The wisdom of leaving out your one 90mph plus bowler and specialist spinner on a flat, dry pitch is something that escapes me to be honest. Looks like a log, hard slog in store.

And Marnus Labuschagne is still there, infuriating England's bowlers with his extravagant leaves and shrieks of 'no run' from a forward defensive back to the bowler.

Oh, and he was dropped on 21. I'm sorry to bring that back up.

After the first hour's play, David Warner had one run from 33 balls, which soon became nine from 50.

It wasn't pretty but credit to him - he's battled it out and is making England's bowlers work very, very hard.

    Thanks, Matt.

Well, I handed over to Matt at the lunch break with the hope that he may have more luck in bringing you England wickets than me.

That didn't quite go to plan, did it?

This break is only 20 minutes long. The players will be back under lights from 9am UK time. Ffion Wynne is back to take you through it.

Those sessions were tough for Australia but they've made England bowl a lot of overs for just one wicket.

Some of those tactics from England were questionable. They seemed to be waiting for Australia to make mistakes and just waiting for the final session when bowling might get easier.

Australia will be feeling pretty comfortable with this position.

  17. Interval - Aus 129-1published at 53 overs

    Warner 65, Labuschagne 53

And there ends a dispiriting session for England.

David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne have batted throughout. England haven't looked like creating a chance and when they did they dropped it.

I'm just not convinced on England's plans. Chris Silverwood has been in charge for a while now and what I've seen today has bemused me at times.

There are too many people giving Joe Root advice and he is often far too quick to take that advice. They always seem to make things too complicated.

  19. Aus 125-1published at 52 overs

    Warner 63, Labuschagne 51

Labuschagne should have been back in the pavilion a long time ago...

That's a well-made half century. It's not been easy, but he's really had to battle it out.
