It has been a good positive start from Crawley.
Zak Crawley gets a bit stride in and shows Pat Cummins the maker's name with a stout block to the third ball of his over. A ball later and he works it nicely off his legs with a turn of the wrists to pick up three more runs.

It is only the second time in Test history England have had two openers under the age of 25 in a Test in Australia. The other was in 1883.
Cautious, careful, concentration. Zak Crawley is observing the three Cs of opening after that rush of blood to the head in the third over.
He is in watchful mode against Mitchell Starc and leaves five successive deliveries. The sixth, he attempts to work round the corner but a leading edge spoons the ball but it plonks safely in the MCG turf.

Daniel Seal: Hameed wearing a chest guard and an arm guard is immediate advantage to the bowler. It shows that he's a bit scared of getting hit. Not a good look for an opener.

If the wicket is going to seam around it could be overkill to pick five. England's bowling options are good enough for me. Sometimes if you play five seamers it can become confusing for a captain and your best bowlers don't bowl enough. I don't mind the team selection.
You feel England have to survive this little attritional battle before lunch if they are have any chance of winning this Test.
Dawid Malan is struck high on the pad leaving after the ball jags in Pat Cummins. Australia smell more wickets.

Mark Burt: While it’s an awful toss to lose, there’s no disguising England are out-gunned in all areas. This series is already a complete mis-match and I can’t see this Test going past three days with England batting first.
Zak Crawley twirls the bat in his hands as he stands upright while Mitchell Starc walks back to his mark.
Fourth ball and a big booming waft of the willow from the Kent man to a slightly wider one from Starc but he does not make contact.
He leaves the next two, bringing a wry smile from Starc on his follow through.

That is England's 50th duck of the year. The all-time record is 54 - England in 1998.
The left-handed Dawid Malan gets a similar delivery to the one which accounted for Haseeb Hameed, but this time the ball carries through without finding the edge.

Hameed casts a dejected, forlorn sight.

That was a very good ball from Pat Cummins. It just did enough off the wicket.
Hameed c Carey b Cummins 0 (Eng 4-1)
Aussie skipper Pat Cummins has his 100th wicket in Test cricket. He gets the ball to nip away ever so slightly on a fuller length and Haseeb Hameed, who is obliged to play, nicks off. Regulation for Alex Carey and the Australians celebrate.

That was a confident stroke. Nothing wrong with that at all.
Encouraging from Zak Crawley as he gets a stride in and pushes it down the ground for three. Always nice to get bat on ball early.
