Totum: Re 23:32 entry. Dr Becky's cracker looks similar to the England top order - bit of a hotch-potch and highly likely to crumble. Rating: must do feta. Will get my coat.

England captain Joe Root: "We would have probably done the same. Speaking to a lot of guys who play Sheffield Shield cricket and the first hour is crucial but we have to use it as an opportunity to put runs on the board early."

Meeting after Adelaide defeat: "I think that's where you need to be at when we have performed like that. We are a better side than we have shown.

"We are more than capable of doing it and there's nowhere better than a Boxing Day Test - it's the best stage and a great opportunity and a chance to put it right."

Looking at the pitch I was tempted to come out of retirement. It is not surprising Australia are having a bowl.

There is more grass on the pitch than at the Gabba.

Australia captain Pat Cummins: "It feels like a bowling day. There is some good grass coverage. It doesn't mean we will bowl them out this morning.

"Scott Boland has been a seasoned performer here. We had earmarked him for a little while and a few injuries it made the decision a little easier. He is a fantastic option for us."

Pat Cummins tosses skyward, Joe Root called heads and it's come down tails.

Australia have won the toss and elected to bowl first at the MCG.

Thanks for getting in touch Hans.

We're moments away from the toss and it seems the consensus is Joe Root should bowl first if he wins.

It feels like a good day to bowl. It is cool and fresh but the temperatures will get to the mid-30s later in the Test.

Not sure where to begin with that, in all honesty, Becky.

  16. 'Toss can go either way'published at 23:20 Greenwich Mean Time 25 December 2021

More from Jonny Bairstow: "It's chilly here! It's a different MCG surface to what we have seen previously. They have worked on a few things from four years ago. Obviously with the conditions around I think it's going to be a decision which could go either way at the toss.

On how England's batters cane improve: "People need to play in the way that has got them here. I think taking those scoring options when they become available is key."

  18. 'Boxing Day Test a dream to play in'published at 23:16 Greenwich Mean Time 25 December 2021

England batter Johnny Bairstow, speaking to BT Sport, before play, said: "Merry Christmas to everyone. We have a lot of experience in the side so getting together as a group has been good. All the families have been here in Melbourne and lots of smiles yesterday.

The debrief after Adelaide was an honest one. Any debrief you have has to be honest. So it wasn't out the norm. and similar to debriefs before albeit with extra focus because its the Ashes.. People will read into what they want to.

"I am excited to be back in. You're playing cricket for England on a Boxing Day Test for England and that's something you always wanted to do and dreamed of as a kid."

The covers are being tugged off by some burly Aussie groundsmen at the MCG so hopefully, provided there's no more rain, we're not too far away from seeing some cricket.
