Can England dream of a first-innings lead?

Nette Fenner: See ya, Steve Smith. I whisper shouted so weirdly I scared the cats off the bed.
Grant Kennett: Jimmy only does it in England... Until he doesn't. Absolute class.
Mark Burt: The Ashes could be fully decided in the next 30 minutes. Two wickets and England are maybe really in the game, otherwise a lead of 120 plus.
The indefatigable James Anderson has 2-22 from his 14 overs.

Steve Smith looked bemused at being bowled, it doesn't happen very often!
Ian Chappell is the grumpy uncle I always wanted.
Travis Head is the new batter for Australia, and he's beaten all ends up by Anderson first up.

Anderson has bowled very well. He has beaten the bat a lot, but that one just clipped the inside edge and took the top of middle stump.
This sums up the tragedy of England's batting. If they'd scraped to 250, their bowlers could have given them a real chance.

He's gone right through him! A wonderful piece of bowling. The seam position was perfect.
Smith b Anderson 16 (Aus 110-4)
JAMES ANDERSON!
Big celebrations from Anderson as he gets a deserved scalp. He draws Steve Smith forward, close enough to take an inside edge and help the ball onto the stumps. Lovely stuff. Joe Root pumps his fist and then drops his head toward the ground, letting out a small cry of "come on!" as Smith departs. Lovely.

This is the best I've seen Marcus Harris play in this series, maybe in Test cricket. He's picked off the bad ball nicely but has had some fortune.
A steward has jogged onto the outfield to retrieve a wayward beachball and is being roundly booed by the entire crowd for his troubles. I miss the MCG.
Steve Smith punches a couple of runs off the back foot, before a straight delivery is worked nicely away by Marcus Harris.

Jim Savage: Marcus Harris somehow summing up both HotSpot and England's performance both at once is pretty impressive.

England's luck has to change at some point. We've been critical of the batting but their bowlers really have toiled away.
James Anderson sends two deliveries within centimetres of Marcus Harris' outside edge. That has happened so much in this series. Maiden.

Mark Burt: Smith will score a ton or at least 92 (his MCG average). He looks in the mood and we all know hope has no place in an England supporter's psyche.

The upshot of that conversation between Stokes and Harris was that Harris wasn't sure if he'd hit it or not. Handy time to whip out the review.
Stokes zips a lovely delivery past Smith's outside edge, who looks even more awkward than usual. The rhythm isn't quite there. It'll make his inevitable century even more irksome for those of you staying up throughout the night.
There's just been a wonderful moment between Ben Stokes and Marcus Harris, in which Harris described HotSpot as "hopeless".
He used a much stronger adjective as well, but I'll leave that to your imagination.

England looked a lot more energised in that first hour. It felt like Joe Root was just willing his bowlers to hit the outside edge, showing a bit of frustration.

I've been pretty underwhelmed by Marcus Harris but this has been a good, battling innings, particularly after he took that whack on the hand yesterday.
He safely prods his way through the rest of Ben Stokes' over.

Disappointment for England. They really needed that wicket.
