If you're just waking up, it's been raining in Sydney, meaning we're only 43 overs in. Stuart Broad got David Warner (obvs) and after a decent partnership between Marcus Harris and Marnus Labuschagne, England have just removed both in quick succession. The sun is now shining at the SCG and we can play until 08:00 GMT.

  2. Aus 117-3published at 07:02 Greenwich Mean Time 5 January 2022

Morning. I've got a baby asleep on my lap, so if we could all keep it down, I'd appreciate it.

M'colleague Stephan Shemilt will take you through the final hour of the day.

He's had some actual sleep, so he'll be on top form.

  4. Aus 117-3published at 42 overs

A maiden from James Anderson as the late evening sunshine makes an appearance at the SCG.

  5. Aus 117-3published at 41.4 overs

James Anderson beats Steve Smith with a belter.

  6. Aus 117-3published at 41 overs

Usman Khawaja is one of the most likeable cricketers around. And not just because he met Will Smith and was very cool about it.

Two fresh batters at the crease for England's bowlers to attack and I think Usman Khawaja will be feeling a little nervous on his return to the side.

  8. Aus 117-3published at 40.3 overs

England have got themselves into a very good situation here, with two new batters at the crease and the fearsome spectre of Marnus Labuschagne back in the dressing room.

Wood greets Khawaja with a bouncer first up.

A better length from Mark Wood. The previous delivery allowed Marnus Labuschagne to punch it for four, but that ball asked a lot more of the batter. England are right back in the game now.

    Labuschagne c Buttler b Wood 28 (Aus 117-3)

    Huge wicket!

A touch fuller from Mark Wood, tempting Marnus Labuschagne into a drive, and a healthy edge finds its way into the gloves of a jubilant Jos Buttler. Labuschagne is fuming with himself. Wood, and England, are absolutely delighted.

  12. Aus 117-2published at 40.1 overs

Marnus Labuschagne welcomes Mark Wood back with a hearty back foot drive that goes racing away for four.

Mark Wood is back in place of Jack Leach.

And Smith is off the mark straight away, driving Anderson through the covers for a smattering of runs.

Nelson lucky for England. Marcus Harris was looking solid, but it was a struggle for him with 38 from 109 balls. James Anderson hasn't made the batters play enough but when he does it's been difficult. He will have to do the same with Steve Smith.

Steve Smith is the new batter for Australia.

    Harris c Root b Anderson 38 (Aus 111-2)

    Gone!

Lovely from James Anderson, drawing Marcus Harris into a shot, and the outside edge goes flying towards Joe Root at first slip. Harris probably didn't need to play at that, in retrospect, and Root is in the right position at the right time to move across and cling onto the catch.

  18. Aus 111-1published at 39 overs

Tidy from Jack Leach, with just a single coming from his latest over.

I don't think Joe Root is a very good captain, but he's also a very unlucky captain given England's bowlers have beaten the bat a helluva lot during this series.

But sometimes you start to wonder: do a team get into the mindset of 'we've bat the bat again, we've beat the bat again'. Sometimes you have to say 'this must stop, we have to find the edge'. I think you almost have to be in the mindset to will it to happen.
