There was also this quite remarkable incident during Ben Stokes' innings.
The ball crashed into off stump, but didn't knock the bail off.
Stokes was given out by the umpire - assuming it had hit his pad - so his review was ultimately successful, but what a bizarre moment.
Australia batter Steve Smith: "We're still in a good position, even though there is some uncertainty around the weather. I thought it was a good counter-attack from Stokes and Bairstow.
"The pitch is doing more with the new ball. When the ball gets soft it's not playing as many tricks."

Debbie: Crying on the bus as Bairstow snuck his way to a well-earned century in the last over - that was *so* tense to listen to.

Bairstow is still there, Leach could hang around. It's possible England could add another 50 runs.
It is, Jim. Hard to believe I know, especially after they were 36-4.
A lot of us thought we might have been doing a Test match review now, rather than a day three review.

Jim Dyson: Can I just check that this is definitely England’s first innings?

It's been a lot of entertainment, it's better than it might have been, because it looked dire at lunch.
You can't escape that Hameed, Crawley, Malan, Root and Buttler all failed.
Mark Wood, too. You can't not love him.
When he came to the crease England were still 44 runs away from avoiding the follow on but he played beautifully.
He is the first player to hit Pat Cummins - the number one-ranked bowler in the world - for three sixes in the same Test innings.

We've seen Stokes and Bairstow bat with incredible bravery and skill.
Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow deserve an immense amount of praise.
Their partnership of 128 for the fifth wicket has given England some hope and there is a chance they can escape from this game with a draw.
Stokes did it with half a body. He was in constant pain throughout with his side injury and was grimacing after every ball.
Bairstow took a blow on the thumb, and was also visually in considerable pain.

That was a bit more like it.
Don't get me wrong, England still have a lot of work to do in this Test. They are still 158 runs behind and will have to battle very hard to avoid defeat.
But, 36-4 feels a long time ago now.

Bairstow has shown the grit and determination needed to succeed in Australia.
Jonny Bairstow came to the crease with England 36-4 and having not scored a single run in 53 balls.
He shared 128 with Ben Stokes for the fifth wicket and has judged his innings perfectly.
He's been defensive and resolute at the right times, and he's climbed into the hosts at the perfect times too.

Bairstow has that lovely feeling of celebrating a hundred, then walking off to take the applause again.
Jonny Bairstow walks off, bat raised. He does a swivel to acknowledge the SCG crowd.
Everyone is stood in the England changing room waiting for him. He gets a big pat on the back from Joe Root and there's even a smile there from the England captain. A century has been a long time coming in this series.
Usman Khawaja and David Warner were among the Australian's to go up to Bairstow and congratulate him at the close of play.

He has played brilliantly.
That is day three done.
England finish on 258-7 - a 158 runs behind.
Jonny Bairstow will resume on 103 and Jack Leach four.
Bairstow reached the landmark with a cut over gully for four. He ran off in celebration and was practically back in the England changing room, roaring in celebration.
England have a century and a five-wicket haul. Progress.
