England had to negotiate a tricky five-over period at the end of the day yesterday, and they survived. Just.

Zak Crawley was caught at slip off Mitchell Starc but got a reprieve because the Australian quick had overstepped by a couple of millimetres.

Crawley would have been out without scoring. Can he now go on and capitalise and earn himself a prolonged stay in this England side?

The 23:00 GMT inspection has naturally been delayed because of the rain.

We'll bring you any news of when the umpires might take a look when we have it.

There are a lot of people outside. This is easily the busiest it has been in the walk to the ground.

It's Pink Day at the SCG in honour of the McGrath Foundation and their work.

    It's so frustrating.

There's hardly anything on the radar.

Aggers is right. They are starting to cover the bowlers' run-ups too.

    Not a good sign.

I don't remember them doing that once in this Test so far.

It looks as if, once again, these sheets are going to be removed... oh, no, they're unfurling another one, unfortunately. That's not a good sign.

England have to produce something today. The new ball has done more than the older and as it's got soft it has skipped on to the bat a bit better. There's always been something in there. Batters describe it as having a ball with your name on it.

While we're waiting feast your eyes on the day two highlights.

It was a day that Australia dominated once again, thanks to Usman Khawaja's ninth Test century.

Strangely though, aside from a couple of sloppy periods, England were actually decent. Particularly Stuart Broad, who took 5-101.

You can also watch extended highlights on BBC iPlayer - you've got the time.

I like the look of that bright spot in the afternoon.

I say bright. Non-rainy is more accurate.

  12. Inspection at 23:00 GMTpublished at 22:36 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2022

We're definitely going to have a delayed start then.

The umpires will take a look at 23:00 GMT, which is when play was due to get under way.

That all depends on if it stops raining before then, of course. It actually looks like it is getting a bit heavier.

We're off to a bit of a damp start. The rain isn't heavy - but it is persistent and annoying.

  14. Postpublished at 22:34 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2022

I say that it is currently raining in Sydney.

Nothing too heavy, but fairly persistent and the covers are on.

It is extremely unlikely we'll be starting at 23:00 GMT as planned. The clouds look fairly set in at the moment.

    Evening!

When plays start at 23:00 GMT England will start day three on 13-0. They are a mammoth 403 runs behind Australia, on a pitch that is already showing signs of misbehaving.

The first target is 217 to avoid the follow-on. That is the bare minimum this England side need to achieve today.

  16. Postpublished at 22:30 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2022

    Day three.

    Moving day.

It is a day England can battle through and take a massive step towards avoiding a series clean sweep.

Or, it is a day where England can collapse and that series clean sweep looms even closer into focus.
