Mark Wood sees off the rest of Pat Cummins' over.

What will England do now? Does Jonny Bairstow continue to attack? Does he look to manoeuvre the ball and get the 44 runs that England need to make Australia bat again? What is he actually physically capable of doing?

Mark Wood has joined the struggling Jonny Bairstow out in the middle.

England are still 44 away from avoiding the follow-on.

It was a good field placing, but can't say it was a great shot.

That leaves Bairstow with no choice. He has to stick out there.

    One brings two.

Pat Cummins has a very good track record of dismissing Jos Buttler in Test cricket and he's got his away.

It is a really soft and tame dismissal. It is just a little chip, checked drive, into Usman Khawaja at short cover.

A second duck for England. They are going for that record again.

Bairstow is finding out what he can and can't do. That's part of batting injured.

  7. Eng 173-5published at 53 overs

Jonny Bairstow is really struggling after that blow to the thumb. Every shot - particularly those into the off side - is bringing a grimace.

He has scored 42 off 38 balls against Nathan Lyon in this innings.

The physio is out again. Will Bairstow be able to keep going?

    That's a wonderful shot, almost one-handed.

    Six more!

Jonny Bairstow is going into ODI mode.

He again gets down low and slog sweeps, but this time much squarer.

    Bairstow is up to 69.

Scott Boland is off the field and has gone for a scan, by the way, after falling over in his follow through on the final ball before tea.

Australia will provide an update in due course.

  11. What have you missed?published at 06:02 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January 2022

If you're just joining us, then morning.

It's been a mixed bag for England, who suffered another batting collapse after rain delayed the start of play by two hours.

They quickly found themselves 36-4, with Joe Root bagging England's first duck of the year as they lost three wickets in 53 balls.

However, a gutsy 128-run stand between a visibly injured Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow lifted England's spirits before Stokes fell lbw to Nathan Lyon for 66.

Bairstow has taken an absolute peppering, including an awful hit to the thumb by Pat Cummins, but he's still there on 61 alongside Jos Buttler.

  12. Eng 165-5published at 52 overs

Jos Buttler defends and leaves the rest of Pat Cummins' over.

It is murky over the SCG. The floodlights have been on all day. It'll be interesting to see if the light does hold and allow us to play until 07:30 GMT.

You don't want to hyperbolise the situation, but you'd be amazed if that's not broken in a couple of places. It's giving me shivers.

Jonny Bairstow looks like he is going to try and carry on, but his thumb has been heavily taped.

He's just played a shadow shot and he seems happy. The SCG give him a round of applause.

That's a nasty one to receive. It's real big trouble. If that's not a completely busted, broken thumb, I'll be amazed.

That really hurt him. He's in trouble.

  17. ouch!

    Eng 165-5published at 51.1 overs

Jonny Bairstow is in trouble here. Pat Cummins has hit him on the thumb.

The ball flew over the slip cordon and Bairstow hopped, skipped and jumped down to the non-striker's end, while constantly shaking his hand.

He immediately falls to the floor, takes off his helmet and calls for the physio.

    That could be a break.

I'm not being negative, but England do have a long tail. They are still 53 runs away from avoiding the follow-on - that is England's first aim.

Jos Buttler is the new batter.

Just as England were turning the tide, Australia throw a counter-punch. Lyon skipped one through and as soon as it hit Stokes he turned around and walked off. It was a gallant effort.

Stokes had already walked. Australia look relieved.
