I know it's an obvious thing to say but early wickets are so crucial for England now.

They have to limit Australia as much as they can. David Warner can't be allowed to get off to a flier.

I reckon they should give Mark Wood a go with the new ball today.

England's tailenders had nothing to lose this morning. You might as well try and make the lead as small as possible.

Normally Stuart Broad and James Anderson would be running off into the changing room to get their bowling boots on but they both walked off so slowly.

England still haven't passed 300 on this tour!

It was a real get on with it approach from England's tailenders this morning.

    Boo.

Stuart Broad goes for a big swing, top edges the ball up into the air, and Alex Carey wins the race to charge around and take the catch.

    England trail by 122 runs.

Surely everyone around the world knows that James Anderson's get out of jail shot is the reverse sweep.

That is one of James Anderson's shots - he timed it really well.

  13. Eng 294-9published at 79 overs

    Trail by 122

Jimmy Anderson unfurls his incredibly underrated reverse sweep to pick up four.

Scott Boland, incidentally, now has 10 wickets from his two appearances. Ollie Robinson is England's leading wicket-taker with nine. Hmm.

Because it is the funniest option and Broad will always, always take the funniest option possible. A comedy genius.

The new ball is available in two overs.

I'd swing the bat, lads, and swing hard.

  17. Eng 289-9published at 78 overs

Scott Boland has 3-36 from his 14 overs, to go with 6-7 from the MCG.

Scott Boland is just bowling good lines and lengths.

There was zero foot movement from Jonny Bairstow and he was playing away from his body.

It is nice to see an England batter score 100 runs though. It is something for the England boys to say they've achieved on this tour. He should be really proud of himself for that knock.

Scott Boland has another one! Jonny Bairstow was pushing at it - it is a rather tame end.

He hasn't been able to come back today and really capitalise. It was a memorable innings though. It has given England some hope in this Test match.

  20. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 77.5 overs

    Bairstow c Carey b Boland 113 (Eng 289-9)

Jonny Bairstow's tremendous innings comes to an end.

A slight fiddle outside off stump and a thin outside edge goes straight through to Alex Carey. Bairstow raises his bat and acknowledges the ovation from the SCG crowd as he walks off, having rescued England from a pretty dire situation.
