    Eng 270-8published at 74 overs

I do think it's wise to ensure Stuart Broad doesn't face too much of Mitchell Starc.

Ooft. Jonny Bairstow goes for a slog, misses, and Alex Carey becomes the latest player to take a smack on the hand. I think that's got him right on the fingertips. Ouch.

Jonny Bairstow almost lapped Stuart Broad on that run. Broad was slow to get going.

It was outstanding running from Jonny Bairstow, and just an awareness of who is where and who to take on.

Jonny Bairstow flicks into the leg side and pushes hard, calling for two straight away.

In comes the throw, Alex Carey has the bails off... but Jonny Bairstow is so, so quick. He's in by a foot.

  5. Eng 267-8published at 73.1 overs

Jonny Bairstow nearly puts his back out as he stretches to reach a wide delivery from Mitchell Starc.

Starc gives the popping crease a suspicious look as he strolls back to his mark.

This is one of those innings that could be very contrasting for Stuart Broad. It will be like two sides of the scales.

  7. Eng 267-8published at 73 overs

The good news is we now get to watch Stuart Broad for a bit.

For a moment there it looked like Jack Leach got hold of that properly but it was a top edge. There were moments of entertainment in there.

It does mean Stuart Broad is coming out with seven overs before the new ball, with licence to play some shots.

    Leach c Cummins b Lyon 10 (Eng 266-8)

    Whoops.

Jack Leach goes for a big slog-sweep, mistimes it and spoons the ball up in the air, where it settles into the grateful hands of Pat Cummins.

That was very odd. If the bowler doesn't appeal then it is rarely out.

Steve Smith's enthusiasm went against him there.

Steve Smith was really confident at second slip.

It looks like he has missed it by miles.

Mitchell Starc is shaking his head. He didn't hear a thing.

  14. Australia reviewpublished at 23:08 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January 2022

Leach's next drive is, erm, a little bit less successful.

Oh hang on! Australia are reviewing this for a caught behind. Steve Smith is convinced.

That is a wonderful shot. That is as good as any top six player would play.

Woah, Jack Leach! Excuse me. Yesterday we had Mark Wood hooking Pat Cummins for six and now we've already got Jack Leach straight driving Mitchell Starc for four.

    What a stroke.

  17. Eng 265-7published at 71.5 overs

    Jack LEACH!

What a shot that is! The calmest of off-drives off Mitchell Starc that goes merrily racing away for four.

  18. Eng 261-7published at 71.3 overs

Jonny Bairstow gets his first run of the morning with a little dab through point, before Starc and Carey make an optimistic appeal for a caught behind against Leach.

It's very quiet at the SCG. The Barmy Army trumpet is echoing around the ground.

    Here's Mitchell Starc.

  20. Eng 260-7published at 71 overs

Jack Leach sees off the rest of Nathan Lyon's over with relative ease.
