They've finished for the day in Christchurch, where New Zealand, who are 1-0 down in the series, have closed on a whopping 349-1 after being put in to bat on day one.

Tom Latham smoked an unbeaten 186 and Devon Conway goes to bed 99 not out.

The scorecard for that match is here.

Mitchell Starc starts over the wicket to Jonny Bairstow, arrowing the ball across himself but the Yorkshireman is happy to let the ball go by.

Starc goes over the wicket, and gets one to rise and rap Bairstow on the gloves. It is the probably the last thing he wants, considering the thumb injury he already has. It drops wide of the short leg fielder.

Mitchell Starc, who has struggled for consistency in this innings, replaces Scott Boland.

Pat Cummins is certainly rotating his bowlers.

The bowlers are weary. They need the new ball. Starc looks a bit off his best at the moment and Cummins hasn't been quite where he was earlier in the series.

Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow take a single apiece from Nathan Lyon's first over back.

Australia will be desperate to get their hands on that new ball. It is seven overs away.

Spinner Nathan Lyon is on for a bowl with the new ball just eight overs away.

It's hit Bairstow on the thigh pad. It's definitely going over.

Appeal from Australia, but it is more out of hope and desperation to be honest. Scott Boland, who just banged away at a line and length all day long, hits Jonny Bairstow on the thigh pad, but he is deep in crease and it is definitely going over the top. It was probably sliding down too.

Bairstow has a wild cut at the final ball, but misses. Pack that away, Jonny.

It's hard to watch when Stokes plays an attacking shot because he is in so much pain. It shows the type of player he is that he still wants to get the runs.

Pat Cummins bangs one in short and Ben Stokes opts to take it on. He connects well and the pull goes fine and away to the boundary.

Stokes is in so much pain, it is almost uncomfortable to watch.

Ben Stokes' half-century came from 107 balls with his eighth four. It's his 36th score of 50 or more, 10 of which he has converted into hundreds.

  13. Eng 181-4published at 70 overs

Another over ticks by without any real scares for England. There are 32 overs left and 10 overs until the new ball.

Do we reckon Pat Cummins is the type of captain to shake hands on a draw when we're in the final hour?

The invariable bounce is starting to be more and more consistent now. Pat Cummins gets one to rise and hit Ben Stokes on the top hand. Will England have any batters left for Hobart at this rate?

Oh. Lovely! Beautiful balance and placement from Stokes, as he flicks through mid-wicket for four to bring up his half-century.

He doesn't really want to acknowledge it. He just has a casual flick of the bat and then immediately drops it. He knows the job is far from done.

It will be Australia captain Pat Cummins from the other end. He is wicketless in this innings so far.

That wasn't dissimilar to the ball that injured Jos Buttler.

A maiden to start. There are continued signs of this pitch becoming more and more difficult though as one scuttles low, before the next ball rises a bit.

One over negotiated though - just the 34 to go.
