England are saying everyone is fit to bat. We saw Jos Buttler having some very gentle throwdowns. It looked a bit tentative.

  2. 'Confident we can draw with right approach' - Thorpepublished at 22:45 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2022

At the close of play yesterday England caretaker coach Graham Thorpe told Test Match Special that he was "confident" they could draw the game if they showed "the right approach".

"It is important we don't go into our bunkers," added Thorpe.

"When you're playing for the draw you must keep that intent because it makes you move better and allows you to make better decisions.

"I want the guys to enjoy the contest - Australia will come hard and the period at the end of day four was a good example of our players' temperament and technique being good."

There is some rain on the radar, but at the moment it is looking fine and we will be starting on time.

One of the big questions going into the day's play is what impact will the weather have?

This is the current BBC Weather forecast for Sydney - and I've seen others that predict even more rain and storms.

However, the forecast was absolutely woeful yesterday and we got through the whole day.

I think we should make a pact. Let's all assume we'll see no rain, and England have to survive the whole day.

  6. What's the game situation?published at 22:36 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2022

Let's give you a reminder of what's what ahead of play resuming at 23:00 GMT.

England have been set 388 to win - let's face it, that result is extremely unlikely.

In reality, they have to bat through the day and survive a minimum of 98 overs to escape from Sydney from a draw. For Australia it is quite simple really, they need 10 wickets.

England will be resuming on 30-0 this evening, after openers Zak Crawley and Haseeb Hameed battled through a tricky 11-over spell late last night with the storm clouds rolling in.

If England do bat out the day they'll have done a pretty good job.

    Evening!

How are you all? Nervous? Confident? Apprehensive? Looking forward to sleeping at normal times again, at least for a few days?

It could be another day of pain for England fans. Or you might start to see a glimmer of hope on the horizon.

    98 overs.

    588 balls.

England have to show and have 588 (or at least 579...) moments of concentration, temperament, class and at times luck today.

Can they do it and escape from this Test match with a draw? Or will they be going to Hobart with a series clean sweep still on the table?
