England will not want Australia to get anywhere past 300, it's a dangerous total. But England are already dicing with danger with nearly 250 on the board.

When you see a pitch like that, it's county cricket in April. It's Darren Stevens trundling up and nipping it here and there.

Maybe it was through a desire of putting things right and that desperation to win a game. Maybe that's what went wrong for England.

Australia have seemed so clear with their decision making, whether out on the field or management of Travis Head - telling him he'd come back in and play in the next game when he was isolating. But England's decision making, in comparison, has been a little bit higgledy-piggledy.

South Africa have just beaten India by seven wickets in Cape Town.

That means they win the three-Test series 2-1.

Don't forget England play South Africa in a Test series in August.

    Check out the scorecard.

Steven Finn has just asked you all to watch the Marnus Labuschagne wicket so here you go...

    Enjoy.

  7. 'Pretty enjoyable'published at 11:41 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January 2022

Australia batter Travis Head - who scored 101 - speaking to ABC Radio: "It was great to contribute. I'm pretty disappointed to not still be out there but I feel like we're at a good position.

On going on the counter-attack with Marnus Labuschagne: "It was pretty enjoyable. You can't make too many mistakes at 12-3. We were going to be ultra positive with whatever scoring we could get and tried to enjoy it. The ball was seaming about, the crowd on it, it was an enjoyable partnership."

On returning to side after Covid: "It was a tough seven days but I just had to prepare myself for Hobart, knowing I would come back in. I was one of the fortunate ones, I had no symptoms and felt normal. It was a matter of getting through seven days and then back with the boys."

I don't want to be overly critical of Chris Woakes. He didn't play in Melbourne or Sydney. He hasn't played cricket for three weeks which, as a bowler, is significant.

Travis Head has just said he and his team-mates were laughing at some of the balls beating the bat in the early exchanges today.

England were exceptional in the first 10 overs. Since then they have been less than exceptional.

We'll bring you more from Head shortly.

At 12-3, you'd want Australia at 140 or 150 all out - you don't want them to score too much more than that. Well, they have 100 more already.

  11. Postpublished at 11:30 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January 2022

England's bowling did drop off after that initial hour, but you have to give some credit to Travis Head.

He punished any width and length and really switched the momentum and pressure with his swashbuckling century.

Mark Wood had a really off day. I wouldn't have played him on here. It's a grassy pitch and has Craig Overton written all over it.

It's always nice someone roaring in and bowling 90mph but on this pitch you don't want that. You want someone controlled.

There's no doubt Ollie Robinson was a handful on that wicket with his ability to bowl a fuller length and get the batter forward. Once he was injured, England had to manage their resources the best they could.

  14. 'One of the worst days of the series'published at 11:24 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January 2022

    Jonathan Agnew
BBC cricket correspondent on BBC Test Match Special

This has potentially been one of the worst days of the series. England have basically been let down by batting throughout but today the bowling was depressingly poor.

  15. Postpublished at 11:23 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January 2022

A reminder that Australia were 12-3 but they've recovered in brilliant counter-attack style to close on 241-6.

Considering the green pitch and the grey overhead conditions you'd have to say the hosts are in control.

England's best chance is to wake up tomorrow and see blue skies and sun and hope the ball isn't whizzing about too much when Australia come to bowl.
