  1. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 35.4 overs

    Ecclestone lbw b Brown 3 (Eng 143-8)

Good bowling from Darcie Brown. Full, straight and with a hint of movement as Sophie Ecclestone got herself in a bit of a tangle.

The DRS shows the ball going on to hit the middle of the stumps.

    That was plumb.

Sophie Ecclestone can barely look at the umpire. She's reviewed it anyway.

  3. England reviewpublished at 09:35 Greenwich Mean Time 3 February 2022

Sophie Ecclestone is struck in front. The on-field decision is out and this looks plumb.

Think England have reviewed this more in hope than expectation.

  4. Eng 143-8published at 35.2 overs

Good pace from Darcie Brown in the final over her spell. She angles one into the body of Sophie Ecclestone, who is able to fend one off her legs and England scramble a single.

  5. Eng 141-7published at 34.4 overs

A square drive from Katherine Brunt beats the fielder but the sweeper cuts it off and England just pick up a single.

A couple of balls later and Brunt shuffles down the pitch to Tahlia McGrath and has a big waft outside off stump, but doesn't make contact.

  6. Eng 136-8published at 34.0 overs

Katherine Brunt looks a lot more relaxed now as she shares a joke with Sophie Ecclestone. Maybe she's going to have a bit of a go here? Ecclestone looks a lot more circumspect.

Big ask for these two to get England home and save the Ashes from here.

Wild celebrations for Australia, who have now taken a wild leap towards retaining the Ashes.

    The death rattle.

    Well bowled Megan Schutt.

That's it for the English chase.

  9. wicket

    Wyatt b Schutt 20 (Eng 134-7)

Danni Wyatt is bowled by Megan Schutt. It's angled in at Wyatt slightly, and straightens a tad to clip the top of off stump. She's played down the wrong line.

Take On Me by a-ha playing over the PA system in Canberra - but that's not something England's batters have been able to do to the Aussie attack too much today.

My initial reaction was that it was a no-ball. I almost changed my mind but then saw another replay from the front-on angle and it did look like it was high.

Amy Jones' undoing was that her trousers were too high.

It was a marginal call for Amy Jones' wicket but it's also a bit of a trick of the eye because she wears her trousers quite high.

Not quite Simon Cowell level, but I think if she had been wearing a baggy jumper then it would've been called a no-ball.

It's not an outrageous decision but I think England can feel aggrieved.

A boundary down the ground for Danni Wyatt to end the over as she punishes a full toss from Ashleigh Gardner.

Just back to that Amy Jones dismissal for a moment...

Spinner Ashleigh Gardner with the first over after drinks and a cheeky little paddle sweep by Danni Wyatt shows her intent too.

England ticking along okay here. Cricket cliche, but just picking up those ones and twos and then putting the bad ball away will get these two within striking distance.

There is still hope for England, as long as these two can bat for at least the next 10 overs or so and keep up with the run rate.

Australia will try to get that run-rate up to five and then six and see if they can make Wyatt or Brunt make a mistake.

Drinks breakpublished at 09:16 Greenwich Mean Time 3 February 2022

A bit of liquid refreshment to quench a thirst.

Can England do this? If they don't the Ashes are staying firmly on Australian terra firma.

Great pictures of the dismissal of Nat Sciver by Darcie Brown incoming.

  17. Eng 117-6published at 31.0 overs

Megan Schutt back into the attack for the Aussies, who are plugging away as England look content to just prod the ball into the gaps and take the singles on offer just before drinks.

Danni Wyatt is 13 not out off 33 balls while Katherine Brunt is unbeaten on eight from 11.

  19. dropped catch

    Dropped catchpublished at 29.4 overs

Danni Wyatt biffs one straight out the middle of the bat and there's a caught-and-bowled chance for Ellyse Perry, but she reacts too late and spills it at shin height.

  20. Eng 113-6published at 29.0 overs

Katherine Brunt, in many ways, is exactly the type of gritty competitor for this situation. She has concentration etched on her face as the youthful Darcie Brown bounds in.

Brown gets one to climb off the pitch with her final delivery of the over and it beats the defensive prod of Danni Wyatt and there's a half-hearted appeal for lbw after it struck her on the back leg, but the umpires are not interested.

It turns out Brown had overstepped and England get a free hit but Brunt is unable to make contact with her slower ball.
