Again England fought back, this time through Kate Cross and Sophie Ecclestone, but for the second game running they fell agonisingly short of victory.

Anisa Mohammed sealed the win by bowling Anya Shrubsole to maintain West Indies perfect start to the World Cup.

Danni Wyatt and Sophia Dunkley got England back on track but both fell as West Indies took three wickets in six balls to put themselves in the ascendency...

West Indies were guilty of shelling a number of chances themselves once the England chase began.

However, Deandra Dottin single-handedly (sorry!) made amends with a stunning one-handed grab at backward point as the defending champions' top-order faltered...

It was a tale of dropped catches for England, five of them in total, starting with the first ball of the match. There were a couple of tough ones but two or three real dollies as well.

West Indies took advantage to get up to a match-winning total...

West Indies captain Stafanie Taylor on Sky Sports: "It's not something that I like, it was a bit nerve-wracking for me but I'm really glad that we came out on the good side.

"I guess when we checked the totals here, we were around about par, maybe about 10 runs short. We had to bowl really well and field well, I think we did that in patches. We need to look at that and be as consistent as we can.

"Taking it back, Shemaine Campbelle and Chedean Nation have won us games in the past, so both of them are looking really good and it's important for the lower order to step in when the top order fails. I thought they did brilliantly today."

England captain Heather Knight on Sky Sports: "They batted outstandingly at the start on a good wicket. But we clawed it back brilliantly, Sophie Ecclestone and Kate Cross were outstanding in that middle period.

"We felt like we were in a good position but the last six or seven overs went for too many today.

"The fielding performance wasn't us. We're not too concerned, there's a bit of frustrating but there's a lot of we could've done differently there. We've got to be better as a fielding group.

"It was a good wicket, but at halfway we thought they had a below-par score. We got a few good partnerships together but clusters of wickets cost us.

"I want the girls to keep that attacking mindset but we just need to be more clinical with the execution.

"Sophie has worked so hard on her batting, she's a proper batter and she got us into a really good position with Kate Cross."

West Indies did superbly to hold their nerve and complete another nerve-shredding win but England will undoubtedly look at this game as a series of missed opportunities, going right back to the first ball of the match when Lauren Winfield-Hill dropped Deandra Dottin.

Player of the match Shemaine Campbelle: "We played really well. There were some great catches, but we just had to hold our nerve and we did that, and we kept supporting each other too.

"We've got to keep doing what we're doing. Runs on the board are helpful, that's what we back ourselves to do."

Sophie Ecclestone and Kate Cross did brilliantly there, they got England into such a good position.

We said the West Indies were a dangerous side, and they've proved that. England have got to turn things around and they have to do it quickly.

That's not good enough. Things have got to change. England should be really disappointed with themselves.

  14. West Indies beat England by seven runspublished at 05:23 Greenwich Mean Time 9 March 2022

Incredible! What a match! England have been involved in two classics to start this tournament but that will be little consolation as they start their World Cup defence with back-to-back defeats.

It's a different story for West Indies - two incredible, close games but they've won them both!

A thriller of a game. England's players have hardly moved.
