  1. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 20.1 overs

    Matthews c Shrubsole b Ecclestone 45 (WI 81-1)

The pressure tells! It felt inevitable.

Sophie Ecclestone, bowling nicely in tandem with Cross at the other end, sticks to a good length and tempts Hayley Matthews into a booming drive that squirts off the outside edge and into Anya Shrubsole's hands at backward point.

Something had to give, and it was just what England needed.

  2. WI 81-0published at 20 overs

    Dottin 31, Matthews 45

Kate Cross may have dropped a catch in her first over but she's bowled beautifully since, giving absolutely nothing away.

    Deandra Dottin is ticking ...

Now Sophie Ecclestone has come on to bowl, West Indies might take more risks from the other end.

  4. WI 81-0published at 19 overs

The big shot comes out ... but it lands safely in front of the fielder at long-on and Dottin can only manage a single.

West Indies need another big over from somewhere, as England are really squeezing now.

  5. WI 79-0published at 18 overs

Deandra Dottin is getting impatient, so this will be fun. It could go one way or the other.

England have pegged them back very nicely since the end of the powerplay, testing the openers' patience.

Another maiden ... the pressure builds.

It's a good game of cat and mouse between Ecclestone and Dottin here.

The key for West Indies here is to not let Sophie Ecclestone settle. Once she does, she's brilliant and I think the best in the world.

  8. WI 78-0published at 17 overs

Sophie Ecclestone is on for the first time today.

She bowled her 10 overs for 77 against Australia on Saturday without taking a wicket.

But here she starts with a maiden, which is a good sign for England.

Things haven't gone to plan for England's bowlers but Amy Jones is one player who certainly deserves a shout out.

It's not been the greatest start for England. The senior heads have lost the plot out there. I'm sure Heather Knight will be rallying the troops during the drinks break.

Do you want to see a third dropped catch?

  12. drinks break

    WI 78-0published at 16 overs

Another slow over as Kate Cross continues to plug away at a full length.

The players take a drink. In these conditions I'm sure they'd much prefer a cup of tea than cold water, to be honest.

And now I want a cup of tea.

I'm not giving England an excuse but it is a grim time to be fielding. It is cold and damp out there.

  14. WI 77-0published at 15 overs

It's all gone a bit flat.

A few more sixes would be fun. Or a wicket, for England, of course.

England will know if they break this partnership and get into the middle-order, that is where West Indies are fragile. It is about holding your nerve.

  16. WI 74-0published at 14 overs

Batting looks easy, dare I say it?

A better over from Kate Cross but Matthews and Dottin take four comfortable singles plus a gifted run from a wide.

England need to inject some energy into this bowling performance somehow.

  17. Postpublished at 22:52 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2022

And here's the second dropped chance.

Much tougher, but Tammy Beaumont would back herself to take it.

  18. WI 69-0published at 13 overs

Nat Sciver bowls a tidy over that goes for just two, which England could do with a few more of.

How often do we see that, a dropped catch and the next ball goes for four or six? That is an unbelievable shot and Hayley Matthews is carrying on where she left off against New Zealand.

  20. 6 runs

    WI 67-0published at 12 overs

Oh, and just to make Kate Cross feel even worse, Matthews absolutely hammers the next ball back over her head for six.

    Savage.
