Pakistan captain Babar Azam: "It's always good to win, we'll take this confidence forward in the tournament. I think we gave them 10 runs too many, but i that can happen.
"We lost wickets early, but I want to give credit to Shoaib Malik and Asif Ali. Every game is crucial."
New Zealand are next in action on Sunday against India in what will be a massive game, while Pakistan face Afghanistan on Friday.
New Zealand captain Kane Williamson: "It is very disappointing. We were optimistic at the halfway stage and a lot of thought went into what we would be coming up against from this strong Pakistan side.
"It all came to fruition, it was always going to be tough but I think we were maybe a boundary or two short of being above par.
"I knew we could make things difficult for them and that proved itself. Low-scoring games like this come down to very small margins but there was so much good from us there. Credit to Pakistan, they were outstanding.
"We wanted to bowl as straight as possible. The wicket was keeping very low and when you hit your lengths, it was difficult to play your shots.
"It's a tough one to swallow but they're a really strong side and they're ones to watch."
There was a bright spot for New Zealand towards the end of the innings.
Conway denies a six and dismisses Hafeez with a 'sensational' diving catch

And this was the over that put Pakistan on the brink of victory.

New Zealand were 15/20 runs shy. If they'd got 150, it would have been a real struggle for Pakistan but because it was a low total, they didn't have to take any risks.
This result opens up the group and you never know what could happen. Pakistan look like the team to beat.
That final partnership was worth 48 from 23 (!!!) balls.
Terrific work.

That's a phenomenal effort from New Zealand to take it that deep, but it shows the depth of this Pakistan side. It will give them a lot of confidence. They are here to stay and they are a team to look out for.
Asif Ali finishes with an unbeaten 27 from 12 balls to his name, with three sixes and one four to his name.
Shoaib Malik was alongside him, also on 27 from 20 balls with two fours and one six.
That was terrific fun. Pakistan look great. New Zealand fought well with the ball but not enough runs has cost them.

An outstanding performance from Pakistan. They had to dig deep, their middle order was tested but the experience of Shaoib Malik and the hard hitting of Asif Ali gets them over the line.
Pakistan win with eight balls to spare!
Great shot!
Tennis swatted over mid-wicket!
Two from nine!

A couple of dot balls can put a lot of pressure on Pakistan. If it goes to the last over, anything can happen.
Asif Ali faces up, and can't quite scramble through for a leg bye.
Eight from 10.

Health has to come first.
As Carlos Brathwaite just said - this is just a game. If you need to, go off the field and protect yourself.
There's still a delay, but Asif Ali appears to be OK to continue.

This doesn't look good.
