That's it for West Indies' hopes of defending their title, I'm afraid.

Callum's report is available for you to catch up on.

We'll be back tomorrow, when India and New Zealand look to strengthen their semi-final cases.

    See you then.

West Indies will need to change personnel but if you look back at 50-over World Cups, I was told we should have won in 1983 but we took it for granted and haven't won another one since.

We took to T20 like a duck to water and it is coming to an end of an era.

It really was a belting knock from one of the finds of this tournament.

  4. 'This is my pay-off time'published at 17:57 Greenwich Mean Time 4 November 2021

Player of the match Charith Asalanka: "Always glad to have a half-century and a match-winning knock for my country. I look forward to doing it more for my country.

"Before this World Cup I hadn't played a lot of T20 cricket. I asked the senior players questions and wanted to get better and better by the day. That’s it.

"I was waiting for five years and I worked hard to get to the national side. This is my pay-off time. I just want to carry on, work hard and win more matches for my country."

Sri Lanka set a good platform, they built an innings and they created a base for people to finish the innings off.

West Indies have been out played today.

Big credit to Sri Lanka with how convincingly they won the game. They planned well, executed their plan well, but the West Indies will need a post-mortem because of how badly they have played in this tournament.

Shimron Hetmyer kept some interest in this for West Indies but, in truth, it never felt like they were going to chase this. They're a team low on form and low on confidence.

  8. SRI LANKA WIN BY 20 RUNS!published at 20 overs
    Breaking

West Indies' title defence is over!

It has gone wrong since their first Super 12s match, frankly.

  9. WI 168-8published at 19.5 overs

The penultimate ball is somehow sent for four via the inside edge of Shimron Hetmyer's bat.

  10. WI 164-8published at 19.4 overs

No run, as Hetmyer clatters the ball into the stumps at the other end.

    Shot!

Shimron Hetmyer goes big and long over the ropes.

Hetmyer had belief before the over because he slapped his bat after that first delivery.

    Dot.

    It's done.

    34 from six balls.

  16. WI 156-8published at 19 overs

Hetmyer runs one of the worst byes you'll see and, somehow, Sri Lanka don't run out Akeal Hosein despite the fact that he is mid-pitch when Kusal Perera has the ball.

  17. WI 155-8published at 18.5 overs

    Dot ball!

Hetmyer smacks the ball into his leg and then swishes at fresh air, absolutely fuming with himself. That should have gone the distance.

Full from Karunaratne, and it is walloped with disdain by Hetmyer for four.

  20. 6 runs

And Shimron Hetmyer makes it back-to-back sixes with another free-flowing strike back down the ground.
