Runs.
Trent Boult, who swung it round corners in the first innings but struggled yesterday, is short and wide first up, allowing Root to gleefully cut away for four.
That is even better from Root. The timing was perfect as he pushes it through the covers for another boundary.
Jonny Bairstow is the new batter and joins fellow local hero Joe Root in the middle to warm applause. He defends his first ball from Tim Southee to complete an eventful first over.
If you wanted an exciting finish to this Test that is exactly what was needed.

Everyone is just assuming England will knock them. But there could be a thriller here...

The ball jagged back in and crept through between bat and pad. The off stump has now emphatically gone absent.
Pope b Southee 82 (Eng 185-3)
Bowled him! Just the start New Zealand needed.
Tim Southee gets one to jag back into Ollie Pope and is escapes through the gate, sending bails and stumps flying all over the place.

Root made batting look ridiculously easy yesterday. It was almost like a cat pawing at a mouse.
Target 296
Tim Southee goes for a rather optimistic appeal first up as the ball cannons into Ollie Pope's pads.
The umpire isn't interested though as England scamper through for a leg bye.

The players have emerged. Jerusalem is playing. The final day of this series is finally ready to go.
113 runs stand between England and a stunning 3-0 series win.
Thanks Callum.
Headingley is filling up nicely as word of the restart spreads.
No doubt the pubs, coffee shops and cafes have done a roaring trade this morning while we waited for the rain to clear.
Ollie Pope will face first up. Tim Southee has the ball for New Zealand.
Ollie Pope, who is 81 not out, and Joe Root, unbeaten on 55, are stood on the boundary edge doing some stretches.
The New Zealand team have just embraced in huddle and the umpires are walking out.
Tom Mallows will take you through England's chase. Is it going to be a 3-0 series win?

The sun has just come out for the first time at Headingley.
We should hopefully have action from the men's Test in under 10 minutes time.
A reminder that England will need another 113 runs to win and take the series 3-0.
Here are yesterday's highlights to get you in the mood...
Here are the four South Africa wickets that England have picked up this morning.
There has been plenty of movement and they've exploited it well.
Good news from the men's game.
Providing there is no more rain play will get under way in just under 20 minutes.
Lovely.
Thanks Ffion.
It's been a really interesting morning at Taunton and despite England's bowling attack featuring two newbies in Lauren Bell and Issy Wong they've been well on top.
We'll recap the morning session for you and provide updates from Headingley, where there are some positive movements with the covers.
And on that note, that's my stint done.
I'll pass you on to Callum Matthews to take you through the afternoon's action from (hopefully) two Test matches.
In a bit!

I’ve just nipped outside the media centre at Headingley and the rain has all but stopped. There’s a bit of drying up to do and then we should be under way.
While the players go for lunch at Taunton, here's the latest update from Matthew Henry at Headingley, where they took an early lunch at 12:30 BST.
Thankfully it's starting to look a little more promising up north.

It would have been nice to break this partnership before lunch. England would have gone into lunch with a bit of momentum with five down. They'll still be pretty happy though with the morning and how they've bowled.
The ball has done a lot with Wong and Bell threatening the stumps and putting in the effort so England will be really pleased with the morning's work.
