Ollie Robinson is having one of those days at the moment where you bowl out of your boots but don't get much reward for it. When this happens you normally get the skipper or the coach putting their arm around, but really just want wickets to show for it.

  2. SA 87-5published at 29 overs

    Verreynne 12, Harmer 1

Verreynne doesn't look particularly comfortable against Anderson, who is bringing the ball back to him and attacking the stumps, but he is hanging in there.

Plenty of noise from the crowd, too. Suitably refreshed after lunch.

  3. SA 87-5published at 28.1 overs

Close! Harmer defends into the covers and calls for a single, the ball bounces up nicely for Stokes and he takes aim.

The throw is off target and it is just as well for Harmer. He would have been well short of his ground. Instead, he is off the mark.

It's wonderful bowling from Ollie Robinson, either way. Even though he was wicketless this morning I thought he was the best bowler in the attack. He has continued in that rhythm this afternoon.

  5. SA 86-5published at 28 overs

Either side of that review, Robinson fizzes the ball past Verreynne's outside edge. Three plays and misses in a row. Superb from Robinson, just moving the ball away from the right-hander.

The seamer nips one back to hit the batter on the pad, too high for an lbw. Just a no-ball from a very good over.

I don't like to criticise umpires, but that was a terrible decision. A clicky handle, or a dodgy ankle even.

    SA 85-5

Oh dear. Not umpire Gaffaney's finest moment. The ball has missed the outside edge by a long way.

There must have been a noise because the slips all went up. What is clear, though, is the noise definitely wasn't bat on ball.

  8. South Africa reviewpublished at 27.2 overs

    SA 85-6

Big drive from Verreyne, huge appeal for caught behind and the umpire raises his finger.

    Instantly reviewed, though.

Simon Harmer has a trigger movement which leaves his pad just plonked down about off stump. But his defence has looked OK so far.

  10. SA 85-5published at 27 overs

Jimmy Anderson starts from the other end and beats Simon Harmer second ball, a hint of movement to go past the edge as the right-hander pushed at a full delivery.

Harmer shuffles down the pitch later in the over, perhaps trying to negate any late movement, but lets it go through to Foakes.

    Maiden over.

  11. SA 85-5published at 26 overs

Verreynne adds a pair of twos to that all-run four to start the over. One over into the session and after all that running, the batters must be shattered!

Robinson definitely easing himself into his spell after lunch.

  12. SA 81-5published at 25.1 overs

A long, floaty half-volley to start the afternoon from Robinson and Kyle Verreynne drives it elegantly through the covers.

Ben Stokes chases it all the way and flicks it back just before the boundary sponge... but they've run four anyway.

The South African batters are out in the middle and, after a bit of a delay, the England players come jogging out to join them.

Very different conditions now compared the first thing this morning. The sun is out in Manchester. Glorious.

Ollie Robinson will bowl the first over of the session.

Broad only needs seven wickets to go past McGrath, would love to see him do it over this Test match. We sometimes forget how good he is.

Michael Conway: With South Africa on the ropes at five down, isn't it time for England to let them back into the game by removing all the slips and bowling half trackers for an hour?

Now, now, Michael. I'm sure there will be plenty of chances to snipe at England in the days/ weeks/ months to come but when they have the opposition five down at lunch it feels a tad harsh...

It felt like it was going to be tricky to bat for the first hour and I thought Anderson and Robinson bowled beautifully with the new ball.

Then when they got into their work, each bowler dovetailed nicely and it ended with those two Stokes wickets, I think as a result of the pressure they'd built up on South Africa.

The sun is shining at Old Trafford now but it may be a little too late for South Africa. Dean Elgar's decision to bat first at the toss was forced on him to a certain extent given they have picked two spinners.

However, it doesn't look too clever at the moment. England made the most of the overhead conditions in the morning session and now find themselves in a strong position.

You all seem to be questioning that South African decision at the toss:

Dave Ross: Just checked the cricket score on the BBC website. Great morning for England. Why would any team not ask this England side to bat first though? Very fragile in first innings, no idea how to set a target and strength is chasing anything in fourth innings. Bizarre.

JayRad: Can’t fathom why SA opted to bat. Decent bowling conditions, just demolished England’s batting last week, bowlers got their tails up. Surely you’d get into the likes of Crawley and Lees straight away again?
