Jack Leach has peeled off his cap, he's directing fielders left and right. Let's see if he can get anything from this surface. It's very early in the game so I wouldn't expect too much yet.

  2. SA 71-4published at 22 overs

Jack Leach about to be brought into the attack in that oft-used strategy of an over or two of spin before lunch.

Markram got away with one earlier. Stokes is covering his face with embarrassment, he knows he's burgled one. It's another long hop.

    Captain fantastic. Well, kind of.

Two long hops in three balls from Ben Stokes and he gets a wicket with the second of them.

Aiden Markram attempts to pull it and instead top edges it high into the air. Ben Foakes jogs to his left and calmly takes the catch.

Stokes covers his faces sheepishly, half smiling, reluctant to take the high fives. He can't believe his luck. There's a familiar saying in club cricket for this type of dismissal but, alas, we're on before the watershed.

  5. SA 66-3published at 21 overs

Rassie van der Dussen is 33 but has a clean-shaven boyish face. I imagine he blushes easily. He looks like he has a sold technique, good defence and an average of 32.85 in 17 Test matches.

Stuart Broad carefully inspects his fingers as he positions them on the seam for his fourth ball and the South Africa batter drives it wide of mid-off for a couple. Worse still for Broad, a no ball.

Ben Stokes set to replace James Anderson, fancying a couple of overs himself before lunch.

Anderson has bowled shorter than both Broad and Robinson this morning, which means he's less likely to find the edge. It can look pretty when the ball jags, but it is easier for a batter to play the line and miss it.

    A lesser-spotted boundary!

  8. SA 60-3published at 20 overs

James Anderson, that familiar snappy action of his on delivery, is chuntering after his third ball. It's a fraction short and wide which allows Rassie van der Dussen to waspishly flash it through the gully region for four.

Ben Stokes is loosening up himself.

This feels like a really important partnership for South Africa.

  10. SA 53-3published at 19 overs

Ben Stokes squints, chews gum and offers a few words of calm encouragement to Stuart Broad.

The England fast bowler responds with his third ball which beats the outside edge of Aiden Markham. Broad strokes his chin on the follow through.

England's seamers have been brilliant. They've been asking the right questions as a combination, really backing one another up.

  12. SA 50-3published at 18.0 overs

Watchful from Rassie van der Dussen to James Anderson, as he picks his moments to defend and leave to England's all-time leading Test wicket-taker.

An attacking field from Ben Stokes with three slips, a gully and a man under the lid.

Just two runs off Anderson's final ball as Van der Dussen flicks one of his pads for a couple.

  13. SA 48-3published at 17 overs

Stuart Broad has 2-8 from four overs. Some movement through the air and off the pitch in the last six balls.

A testing 30 minutes or so for Rassie van der Dussen and Aiden Markram to negotiate before the luncheon interval.

Old Trafford has been a good ground to bat first on in Test cricket. Since 2007, there have been 11 Tests here and the side batting first have scored under 325 only once. That was India's 152 in 2014.

  16. SA 41-3published at 16.0 overs

James Anderson straight on the money. A maiden over.

A colleague has questioned South Africa's decision to bat first under grey skies and against James Anderson on his own patch - worth remembering they picked two spinners so had kind of made their bed.

Batting should get easier if the sun pops out this afternoon.

This is a big innings for Markram. His team is in trouble, someone needs to make a play. Also, a lot of faith has been shown in him and what better way to repay than with a big score?

  19. SA 41-3published at 15 overs

Rassie van der Dussen is the new man. Foot to the throat - or something from the performance analysts - as Ben Stokes brings James Anderson back into the attack.

England are going to bolster this slip cordon again. In jogs Jimmy Anderson. Five slips and a gully, always a great sight.
