I imagine the introduction of Jack Leach would tempt some shots from Rabada.

If I were Leach I'd be throwing it up and asking them to hit me because the boundaries are actually quite big.

England will be happy with their efforts so far but frustration may be starting to creep in with this partnership.

Can Jack Leach break it? The left-arm spinner is coming on to give it a go.

There are now four men down the leg side for Rabada's pull shot. Erratic is the way you can describe his batting.

For the amount of shots he has played, the fact that he has only hit two boundaries is quite astonishing.

We often talk about bowlers trying to keep batters guessing but it is the other way around at the moment. Kagiso Rabada is swinging hard, coming down the pitch one ball, moving across his stumps the next but with limited success.

Lovely shot to end the over, Nortje carving the ball away between the slips and gully for four.

Nortje is proving stubborn here. He's not pretty, he does stay a bit leg side but he's very determined.

A more conventional approach from Broad in this over as he gets five balls at Nortje. All of them are on a good length but the South Africa number 10 holds firm.

He's off the mark, too, guiding the ball down to third man very smartly for four.

Stuart Broad removed Kyle Verreynne to leave South Africa eight down. A beauty of a delivery to find the outside edge through to Ben Foakes.

Three wickets so far today for Broad, who came on as first change...

I suppose at Lord's you can trust the bounce. Here it's not all the same, so ducking is not the best option. Bowling short is not a bad ploy to use at this stage.

I think England are bowling the short stuff to these tailenders because they feel the zip is gone.

It definitely feels as though the surface has died down, feels very damp on the foot. The sunny, blue skies are affecting the bounce as well.

  10. SA 125-8published at 43 overs

Perhaps England have learned their lesson when it comes to riling up Nortje?

Stokes goes full to him a couple of times in the over and even when he does bang it in short, it is not targeted at his head. It's more in at the ribs.

    Either way, Nortje battles through.

No slip now for Broad, bowling to Rabada. Three fielders on the leg side for a catch. Rabada is showing a lot of intent but not quite timing it.

  12. SA 124-8published at 42 overs

Broad does go full to start his latest over... and Rabada hammers him away through mid-wicket for four.

Just one more run from the over, a single for Rabada fifth ball. The left-hander is playing his shots and, so far, he's doing so well for South Africa.

Away from Old Trafford and The Hundred continues apace with Southern Brave taking on Trent Rockets this afternoon.

You can watch the women's game live on BBC iPlayer from 15:20 BST.

  14. SA 119-8published at 41 overs

Rabada takes a single from Stokes' first ball, giving the England skipper five at Anricj Nortje.

He gets the South African tailender hopping around a bit with a couple of short ball but Nortje survives. No joy with the short ball just yet.

Ben Stokes is coming on to bowl now. Expect more short stuff...

I saw Stuart Broad yesterday and told him what I thought of England's short-ball approach to the lower order - let's just say it was a short conversation. I think they are going to stick to it. All the wickets today have come about by bowling it up there. If you have one ball at the number 10 you should try to bowl him out - a bouncer is a waste.

  17. SA 118-8published at 40 overs

Broad bluffs Rabada to start the over, going full despite the field.

The next ball is short but doesn't get up at all and hits Rabada on the shoulder as he tries to duck it.

A couple more full balls are flicked away leg side by Rabada before another full ball is well defended by Nortje to end the over.

Just one slip in place as Broad prepares to bowl to Rabada. Three men out on the hook.

Listening to England's players in the media this week they are not going to change the way they play with the bat despite what happened at Lord's.

  20. SA 115-8published at 39 overs

Well, it's Rabada on strike but England are going to go short again. It's still Jimmy Anderson which makes it an even more curious decision but there we are.

Rabada crunches a pull shot away for four, leading to Stokes putting another man out on the hook. The South Africa left-hander backs away to the next bumper and thrashes it over the off side this time. Three runs.

Anderson does go full to Nortje but the number 10 defends solidly.
