Ben Foakes on captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum: "They're so clear in what they want from you, they don't put you under too much pressure. They just let you go and do it your way and play with freedom. They're so supportive.

"It's obviously not easy and they've got a fantastic bowling attack so it was tough out there. That partnership (with Stokes) has obviously got us into a good place in the game. Hopefully we can do the job tomorrow and the next day."

Today was Ben Foakes' first Test century at home and his first three-figure knock for England since he made his debut in Galle against Sri Lanka in 2018.

England wicketkeeper-batter Ben Foakes, speaking to Sky Sports: "It feels amazing. It's a bit of relief but overjoyed to get a Test hundred. I got one in my first game and then I've had a little bit of a wait and I realised how hard they are to come by. I think I celebrated this one a bit more.

"It's such a great opportunity to play for England and you want to contribute as much as possible. When you go through lean patches, when you get runs, it makes it even more special.

"The whole journey makes you really value it. Having to wait and work hard for it means that days like that are amazing."

I think when England find themselves in a good position the burners go down from the South Africa bowlers in their third and fourth spells. Zak Crawley did a good job for your team in this Test match. In the long run you don't want an opening batter to just take the shine off the ball, but in the context of this game it was important.

You have to give credit, it's England's day. They set themselves well this morning and to dominate with the bat as they did today, they had to be disciplined. Stokes got his half-century from 100 balls, that's the longest it's taken him to get to 50. It shows you've got to apply yourself against this quality South African attack.

The conditions are completely different to what we saw yesterday morning, the pitch has flattened out and you can bat long. That partnership between Foakes and Stokes really illustrated that if you get in on this surface, it's hard to get out. South Africa now need to post a mammoth total to get themselves back into this contest.

And what a partnership it was.

There's a difference between positivity and recklessness. England got the scorecard going by rotating the strike and being positive. Ben Foakes and Ben Stokes built their partnership by farming the strike until later in the afternoon when they were in on that pitch and were more aggressive.

England could have found themselves in a pretty unpleasant situation this morning, having lost Jonny Bairstow and Zak Crawley in quick sucession.

However, Ben Foakes and Ben Stokes' brilliant 173-run stand help put the hosts back on top.

The dream day for England. Bright sunshine and the batters made hay. They weathered the early storm and the manner Stokes and Foakes played showed the smartness they lack in the first Test match. They saw off the spinners, got the measure f the pitch and took the South Africa attack down. It was touch and go when they came together whether England would make 200.

What a day for Ben Stokes and Ben Foakes.

Ben Stokes leads his team off the field and then he and Zak Crawley go straight over to sign a number of autographs for a group of kids who have gathered at the bottom of the stands.

That is, genuinely, a lovely gesture.

It's very much England's day apart from the last half hour. However, the wicket is behaving better and it could be a long hard day tomorrow.

There's definitely something there for Jack Leach. Especially with so many runs on the board. He could have a big say in South Africa's second innings you feel.

South Africa grit their way through nine overs, but they've got some way to go to get back into this Test.

Both Ben Stokes and Ollie Pope go backpedalling to snaffle a Leach delivery that pops up off Elgar's pad. Shame there was no bat on it, really.
