The England captain needed something to happen and it was he who made it happen!
Erwee c Root b Stokes 26 (SA 58-1)
Ben Stokes turns to himself to get the breakthrough, and does!
It's a bit of a loose drive from Sarel Erwee, who had batted with real discipline up until then. The ball flies low to Joe Root at first slip, who takes a fine catch diving forward.
It was a good opening partnership for South Africa so they will be disappointed to lose a wicket shortly before lunch.

It feels like England need a rethink. Ben Stokes is going to have his first bowl of the match - he can make things happen.
Another maiden from Ollie Robinson.
Just under 20 minutes to go until lunch. Can England get a much-needed wicket before then? South Africa, on the other hand, would be delighted to make it to the break with all 10 wickets in hand.

Dean Elgar extends South Africa's slender lead with four runs clipped off his legs for four down to fine leg as Anderson strays from his consistent line and length for once.
It has been a scrappy innings from the out-of-form Elgar but he has made his way to 30 from 40 balls and done a good job so far.

England will have other times when they bowl much worse than this but have more to show for it. The edge has been beaten, and when it has been taken, the ball hasn't carried. Close shouts for leg before. Somehow, South Africa have survived.

Former South Africa bowler on BBC Test Match Special
You do feel that this is a real test for England. We have all seen that once the ball gets old how challenging it is for the bowlers.

Another good over from Broad but the wait for the first wicket goes on. England need to stay patient here.

The crowd must be wondering what's going on. We have had 12 overs and there hasn't been a wicket.

That was a beautiful ball. Anderson is really testing Elgar's technique.

Another challenging over from Anderson, just two runs from it and more uncertain defensive prods from Dean Elgar. There's half an appeal from the final ball as Anderson nips another one past the outside edge.
The openers have done really well to still be batting now.
After 12 overs in their first innings, South Africa were six wickets down.

Whatever England did yesterday morning went their way, with South Africa nicking everything.
Today England have had a couple beating the bat. That's the way cricket goes from time to time.

More frustration for Broad as Sarel Erwee plays a fine back foot punch for four to conclude the over, and South Africa are into the lead.
The players take a drink.
Another very good decision from Richard Kettleborough as replays show the ball came off the pad and it's way too high to be lbw.
Stokes doesn't look impressed as that's the second review England have lost.
