I wouldn't say there is a great amount of conviction as it took them so long to decide to appeal.

I wouldn't say there is a great amount of conviction as it took them so long to decide to appeal.
England think they have Dean Elgar caught, the ball looping up in the air off something and up to fourth slip.
But was it off the bat? It's quite a reluctant review from Ben Stokes in the end. Stuart Broad wanted it more.
Another beauty from Ollie Robinson beats Sarel Erwee and England appeal as the ball goes through to Ben Foakes. But it's a good decision from the umpire as replays show it just brushed his thigh pad.
Robinson puffs out his cheeks in frustration as he bowls a maiden. He has bowled so well but not taken a wicket.

So much of this game is about momentum. South Africa will have wanted to restrict England to as few runs as possible, so to get those three wickets for just four runs is the perfect start. And after their start with the bat you can feel the momentum swinging back to South Africa again.
Dean Elgar has scored quickly and looked to put England's bowlers under pressure. He's on 24 from 26 balls.
Four more to Dean Elgar as he dabs one past a diving Ollie Robinson at gully, playing the ball late and with control so that it went safely along the ground.
The scores are now level.
Dean Elgar seems to want to bat with a little bit more intent. He tries to pull Stuart Broad's first ball but doesn't time it well and it just trickles over mid-on for a couple.
Broad won't mind seeing that.

A rare bad ball from Ollie Robinson is clipped away nicely by Sarel Erwee for four through mid-wicket, as the bowler just drifts onto the leg stump.
South Africa's deficit is less than 10 now, they have got through this opening period well.

I think it has been England's seven overs. They have beaten the bat a few times and created a few half chances, but South Africa have stuck in there.

Ben Stokes almost pulls off a brilliant run out. Dean Elgar dabs the ball into the off side, there's a bit of hesitation between the batters and Stokes sprints from slip to retrieve it. He gathers the ball in one hand, flicks it to the other in order to throw in an excellent demonstration of athleticism but it's pretty wide of the stumps in the end.
Having withstood some testing bowling, South Africa would have been disappointed to lose their first wicket in that fashion.

The ball is going over the shoulder of Elgar's bat. Anderson is getting nip off the pitch but also the carry through to Foakes.
A rare short, wide ball from James Anderson is cut away to the point boundary by Dean Elgar.

England are still searching for the first breakthrough but it really doesn't feel that far away.
They have bowled brilliantly in tricky conditions again and perhaps yesterday, South Africa just nicked a few more of those good balls.
Ah. The ball pitches ever so slightly outside the line of leg stump. Another couple of centimetres and that would be given out.
The fine margins of Test cricket.

That didn't look high and if that's pitched in line it could be close.
Once again Ollie Robinson hits Erwee on the pads, the batter plays straight but the ball nips past the bat.
The umpire isn't convinced but Ben Stokes opts for a review. It looks close.

What a terrific over from Anderson, beating the bat repeatedly.
There are some very difficult batting conditions out there.

Anderson responds with a few unplayable deliveries that beat Elgar between his bat and pad, and somehow doesn't get the wicket.
It's not looking easy to bat at all.
The first sign of intent from Dean Elgar as he upper cuts Jimmy Anderson over the slips for four runs.

I have crunched the numbers and worked out that this is the eighth time in which the first innings of a Test match have been exactly the same length in terms of balls bowled.
It is the third involving England - the others being against New Zealand in 2002 and a Headingley Ashes Test in 1921.
