  1. 'Changing Test cricket'published at 19:06 British Summer Time 11 September 2022

More from James Anderson: "The summer has been amazing. I'll be honest, Baz [Brendon McCullum] has been a breath of fresh air. He has come in and it just feels positive in the dressing room and the messages that he sends us about going out to entertain, everyone has brought into it. Yes, sometimes it hasn't come off but when it does it's spectacular and I think it has changed not just how we see Test cricket, but how the world sees it.

"I have never hit the winning runs in a Test match and I certainly won't be doing it tomorrow. But Broady had his pads on tonight again so that would have been exciting!

"But we can't take anything for granted so we still want to be as professional as we can."

Zak Crawley tantalises you because when he plays well he hits good balls for four.

My one theory is when he is taken out of his own bubble, because there is a game to be won, he isn't fretting about his technique. Somehow he has to do that more often.

If he is to succeed he has to be a free-flowing, attacking player at the top of the order. I don't think he has the mindset or technique to be a traditional old-style opener. But he has played well so has to play in the next Test match.

  4. 'I am happy to keep contributing'published at 19:02 British Summer Time 11 September 2022

More from England's James Anderson on Zak Crawley: "He has shown glimpses of his talent throughout the summer but not got the big score he would like, but the message that keeps coming to him is to go out and be positive. And also he played smart, he didn't try and whack everything. They both picked the right ball to hit and played to their strengths."

On Ollie Robinson: "I am delighted for him, he has had a tough time of it in recent months but he's worked so hard. We knew when he made his debut for England he was going to be special, he maybe just needed to work on his fitness to get into his third and fourth spells a bit better but he has been brilliant since then."

On his own summer: "It doesn't feel like the summer has been that strenuous for me, we had some tough games at the start but these last few games have been so short so I haven't bowled loads of overs.

"I am happy to keep contributing, even if it's with a filthy long hop to get the last wicket. I really enjoyed my spell with Stuart Broad after lunch today where we built that pressure, on another day we'd have taken four or five wickets in that spell."

  5. 'We only needed another five overs'published at 18:59 British Summer Time 11 September 2022

England bowler James Anderson on Sky Sports: "It's been a great day. We bowled really well, maybe we didn't get our rewards in the first session but they grafted really hard to get through a tricky period. But we stuck at it really well and kept picking up wickets to get us in a great position.

"And then Alex and Zak came out and played exactly how the captain and coach want them to, and got us to a great position by the end of the day."

On the bad light: "The rate we were scoring at, we may have only needed 5-6 overs, they were seeing the ball well and with a good crowd in tonight it would've been good to win it tonight.

"But I can understand why it had to happen, the umpires take that reading on the first day and it sets a precedent for the rest of the game and for example, if it rained all day tomorrow, it would be unfair on South Africa if we ignored that and carried on to get it done tonight.

"It's frustrating but it's the rules. Sometimes though, you think common sense would prevail."

As a batsman you are trying to see off the new ball. Very often when you come to the UK the ball from 15-30 overs is a dangerous moment when it will swing. But this particular ball, you saw the England team working on it. And I think it was over 25 when it started swinging just after lunch.

The ball from Ben Stokes that bowled Marco Jansen, that was 20 overs later. To get it swinging for that period of time was phenomenal.

As a bowler when you have that bit of swing to work with it becomes so difficult for batsman.

England men's schedule is as intense as ever - it's only nine days until the first T20 in Pakistan.

It has been a crazy day because England, who are going to win, had an appalling first session, losing wickets immediately before South Africa reached 70-1 at lunch.

But it all turned in the afternoon and the key was it suddenly started swinging. Anderson and Broad got the flavour, imposed pressure and from then on England dominated the rest of the day.

Still, the crowd had no rain breaks, saw 13 wickets and three innings in a cracking day's play. So not all was lost.

    How it started:

    How it ended:

It wouldn't have taken long to wrap up the win but once the light reading was taken they have to go off if it gets any worse.

I don't think anybody wants to come back tomorrow. South Africa weren't exactly keen to get off the field. But why do they not start games in September at 10.30? If they did the game would have been done and dusted without a doubt.

Ben Stokes is not happy at all and it is really disappointing for this crowd.

The umpires were in a difficult position but you are not going to get a large crowd to watch England win on a Monday with the kids back at school.

That's frustrating but rules are rules, I suppose.

It's been a pleasing hour or so's work for Zak Crawley, in any case.

Ben Stokes not impressed, the crowd not too happy - but that's it for play for the day.
