  1. SA 169-8published at 55.1 overs

It doesn't feel five minutes since Graeme Smith was scoring 200 in every Test innings in England all on his own. The game is changing, that's for sure.

Stuart Broad gets the ball fuller but Kyle Verreynne is able to push him away for a single.

There's a very good chance we'll finish the series with just two totals over 200.

  3. SA 168-8published at 55 overs

    Lead by 128

Well England's captaincy issues didn't need to be handed over for long as Ben Stokes is back with us out in the middle. James Anderson is back on, having just rotated ends.

England's bowlers are yet to get into their post-tea groove.

Who's vice captain with Stokes off the field? It's a fun game to try and guess.

  5. SA 164-8published at 54 overs

    Lead by 124

Keshav Maharaj finds three more with a clip off his hips, good fielding saves a run but that lead edges up a notch more...

  6. SA 161-8published at 53.3 overs

Stuart Broad barrels in and Kyle Verreynne is able to chop him away for a single, as Ben Stokes limps away for some treatment and a bit of a rest. Fast bowling = not good for your joints.

Broad looks smooth enough though, sliding a ball past the edge of Keshav Maharaj's bat.

Stokes needs to have a bit of a break now. It's not as if he's short of options.

  8. SA 160-8published at 16:54 British Summer Time 11 September 2022

Ben Stokes is moving about as well as me after that last over. Time to pass the ball on, I would say skipper. Stuart Broad is coming on now in place of James Anderson.

  9. How's stat?!published at 16:52 British Summer Time 11 September 2022

    Andy Zaltzman
    BBC Test Match Special statistician

There has only been one score of 50 or more scored by a South African batter in this series.

  10. SA 160-8published at 53 overs

    Lead by 120

Every run does seem vital and Keshav Maharaj is able to help himself to four easy ones down the leg side as Ben Stokes strays off line. Stokes' radar is a bit off as he chucks in a full toss which is clipped away for a couple more.

How big a lead before England fans start to get nervous?

I love times like this in Test cricket when every single run feels so significant.

A bit of confusion all round but the review cleared things up - here's how Kagiso Rabada said farewell.

It wasn't that long ago that England were asking for the ball to be changed!

  14. SA 154-8published at 52 overs

Poor old Jack Leach hasn't had a bowl yet in this innings, and only had two overs in the first. I doubt he'll get on tonight either.

Poor Jack Leach is just doing laps of the ground and fielding on various parts of the boundary.

  17. SA 153-8published at 51.3 overs

James Anderson, on 666 Test wickets, comes steaming in with designs on wrapping up this innings pronto. He only has one in this innings but bowled a masterful spell after lunch. he soon has Keshav Maharaj on his toes to fend one out to safety on the off side.

Ben Stokes will want to take the last two wickets all by himself. It's been another inspired spell. Every boundary is going to be crucial for South Africa with such a slender lead.

  19. SA 152-8published at 50.3 overs

Shot! There's no fielders back so when Keshav Maharaj gets bat on ball he's able to punch it away for a four through mid off. Ben Stokes' next ball beats the outside edge.

I think Maharaj could have been given a bit of a licence in this situation. He doesn't come off all the time but when he does, he can be dangerous and add some quick runs for South Africa.
