  1. That's all folkspublished at 18:56 British Summer Time 5 May 2022

Well, that's it for another day. All done well inside seven o'clock. And who would have called that in this day and age of County Championship cricket.

All seven teams who batted first this morning were all still batting at the close of play.

England captain Ben Stokes, picked by Durham to get some batting practice, didn't get a bat.

And, even more astonishingly, Essex and Yorkshire even finished on time - bang on six o'clock.

More of the same to come tomorrow. Do join us . . .

    Fuller b van Buuren 0 (Hampshire 310-8 (95.5 overs) v Gloucestershire)

Gloucestershire strike again in the final over - with what becomes the last ball of the day.

Graeme Van Buuren bowls James Fuller for a third-ball duck.

Liam Dawson is the not-out batsman overnight on 31.

It's a sixth wicket of the session for Gloucestershire, who have rallied well.

From 225-2, home skipper James Vince's loose dismissal has proved a bit of a turning point.

  4. wicket

WICKETpublished at 18:41 British Summer Time 5 May 2022

    Barker c Higgins b Hammond 20 (Hampshire 309-7 v Gloucestershire)

Keith Barker has one got too many and, in the penultimate over, it's a first wicket of the season for spinner Miles Hammond.

  5. Close of play at The Ovalpublished at 18:36 British Summer Time 5 May 2022

    261-6

    An even day in Kennington?

Northants choosing to bowl perhaps tips it in favour of Surrey.

But they could still run them for under 300 in the morning.

Rory Burns the star of the day - 107 his first century since June last year.

Northants chipped away well at the other end but Sam Curran, who walks off 71 not out, has kept Surrey ticking over.

  6. 300 runs

300 up for Hampshirepublished at 18:29 British Summer Time 5 May 2022

    Hampshire 301-6 Gloucestershire

Hampshire reel in their their batting point thanks to a typically positive little cameo from Keith Barker in company with Liam Dawson.

    Four overs to come today.

  7. wicket

WICKETpublished at 18:21 British Summer Time 5 May 2022

    de Grandhomme c sub b Sanderson 11 (Surrey 252-6 v Northants)

A second point for both sides.

Ben Sanderson picks up his second wicket with the second new ball.

And then Gus Atkinson strikes a boundary to raise the Surrey 250.

  8. Close of play in Manchesterpublished at 18:20 British Summer Time 5 May 2022

    Warwickshire 273-7 v Lancashire

Solid effort from Dom Sibley to bat through the day.

But for his first Warwickshire century in three seasons, Lancashire would be right on top in this game.

As it is, the reconstructed Sibley goes to the close still undefeated on 118, in the company of Nathan McAndrew.

  9. wicket

WICKETpublished at 18:05 British Summer Time 5 May 2022

    Burns c Taylor b Sanderson 107 (Surrey 240-5 v Northants)

Rory Burns can’t see out the day either.

Ben Sanderson has picked him up with the second new ball.

So a well-played-but-not-stealing-the-show hundred from Burns.

And it’s probably the innings of the show-stealing kind he needs to force his way back into the England Test side.

  10. Close of play at Chelmsfordpublished at 18:02 British Summer Time 5 May 2022

    Essex 234-3 v Yorks

Yes that’s right, close of play bang on the advertised time!

Wonder if that might catch on?

Anyway, a great day for Essex.

They were stuck in but a stand of 174 between Alastair Cook and Paul Walter has dominated the day.

Cook went to his second hundred of the season but couldn’t get through to the close.

Walter walks off not out 89 but survived two dropped catches before tea.

Yorkshire will be cursing their decision at the toss but did at least earn a point late in the day.

  11. wicket

WICKETpublished at 17:59 British Summer Time 5 May 2022

    Briggs c Jennings b Hassan Ali 1 (Warwickshire 263-7 v Lancashire)

Two wickets in three balls for Lancashire.

Danny Briggs edges to second slip, Keaton Jennings takes a very good catch and Hassan Ali finally gets in on the wicket-taking act.

The new ball has done the trick for the hosts - but they still haven't got Dom Sibley out, He remains on 117.

Next man is new Aussie signing Nathan McAndrew.

    Donald c van Buuren b Amir 1 (Hampshire 272-6 v Gloucestershire)

The return of fit-again Aneurin Donald sadly lasts just six balls as he tries to drive uppishly and holes out in the covers to give Mohammad Amir his third wicket.

  14. wicket

WICKETpublished at 17:53 British Summer Time 5 May 2022

    Cook b Patterson 107 (Essex 230-3 v Yorks)

Some relief for Yorkshire at the end of what’s become a long day.

Alastair Cook goes to force Steve Patterson off the back foot and drags it into his stumps.

An annoyed swoosh of the bat from Cook.

He knows there were a few more out there.

  15. wicket

WICKETpublished at 17:50 British Summer Time 5 May 2022

    Brown c Bracey b Higgins 11 (Hampshire 265-5 v Gloucestershire)

    Ben Brown is gone .

A fifth wicket for Gloucestershire - and a second for Ryan Higgins.

New man is Aneurin Donald, for his first innings since September 2019.

  16. 100 runs

for Rory Burnspublished at 17:43 British Summer Time 5 May 2022

    Surrey 220-4 v Northants

It's been a very difficult 11 months for Rory Burns.

The slump in form since performing well against New Zealand last summer.

The humiliation of a diamond duck first ball of the Ashes (that surely has a name all of its own).

Being left out of the West Indies tour.

And then a poor start to the summer.

But here he is back making centuries on a golden afternoon at The Oval.

    245 balls and 10 boundaries.

  17. wicket

WICKETpublished at 17:38 British Summer Time 5 May 2022

Benjamin lbw Bailey 47 (Warwickshire 240-5 v Lancashire)

With his fifth delivery with the new ball, Tom Bailey makes another breakthrough as he wins an LBW decision against Chris Benjamin.

His stand with Don Sibley was worth 99.

Centurion Sibley remains on 113, joined now by wicketkeeper Michael Burgess, who had already made two centuries himself this season.

  18. new ball

New ballpublished at 17:36 British Summer Time 5 May 2022

    Warwickshire 240-4 (85.1 overs) Lancashire

The new ball was overdue - and still the runs come at Old Trafford.

    5.1 overs overdue, in fact.

So, with 10.5 overs remaining in the day, Lancashire have now taken it.

    Hassan Ali has first crack.

  19. 50 runs

for Sam Curranpublished at 17:32 British Summer Time 5 May 2022

    Surrey 210-4 v Northants

Sam Curran on the comeback trail after injury and a third fifty in as many games here.

Luke Procter is driven on the up through cover point, with typical Curran confidence, to raise a half-century in 102 balls with six fours and a six.

  20. 100 runs

for Alastair Cookpublished at 17:27 British Summer Time 5 May 2022

    Essex 223-2 v Yorks

#Ali, Ali Cook, Ali Cook. Ali, Ali Cook...#

Second hundred of the season for the former England captain.

He pokes forward at Jordan Thompson and sort-of deliberately runs four to third man to go to 99.

Then next ball he cuts him backward of point for a 14th boundary and a century in 255 balls.

    A 71st first-class hundred.
