WICKETpublished at 16:55 British Summer Time 28 July 2022

    Rickelton lbw b Chappell 68 (Northants 115-2, target 202) v Glos

Maybe this isn't quite done at Cheltenham...?

Zak Chappell gets rid of Ryan Rickelton, who takes a swing, misses and the ball strikes him on the pads.

Rickelton's knock of 68 from just 47 balls has put Northants very much in pole position, though - they need 86 more at under four an over.

  2. wicket

WICKETpublished at 16:53 British Summer Time 28 July 2022

    Pope c Benjamin b Wheal 52 (Surrey 230-3, target 248) v Warwicks

We said Ollie Pope was a man in a hurry. Too much of a hurry, perhaps, because he's just charged Brad Wheal and miscued high on the off side, with Chris Benjamin taking a simple catch.

Just 18 needed, with Ben Foakes out there to join Hashim Amla.

  3. 50 runs

for Ollie Popepublished at 16:50 British Summer Time 28 July 2022

    Surrey 229-2 (target 248) v Warwicks

Ollie Pope wants to get this done quickly.

The Surrey batter has just swept Danny Briggs for successive fours to bring up his second half-century of the match from 48 balls.

Only 19 more runs to seal another Surrey win.

    Surrey 209-2 (target 248 v Warwicks)

Surrey have never, ever looked remotely uncomfortable in pursuit of this target.

Hashim Amla and Ollie Pope have now added 80 for the third wicket and it's only a matter of time before the home side get over the line.

Warwickshire may have started the day with high hopes of saving the game, but that spell by Kemar Roach in the opening hour has ultimately been decisive.

    Northants 81-1 (target 202) v Glos

Ryan Rickelton holds the key here for Northamptonshire, you feel.

The South African left-hander has been a revelation for Northants and he's just passed 50 for the sixth time in eight innings.

It's taken Rickelton just 38 balls and he brought up the landmark by clattering Zafar Gohar for two enormous leg-side sixes. If he stays in, you feel this is Northants' game.

  6. wicket

LANCASHIRE WIN BY 184 RUNSpublished at 16:29 British Summer Time 28 July 2022

Three wickets in 15 balls straight after tea - and Lancashire have won.

First India spinner Washington Sundar had Matt Henry stumped by George Lavelle, then Tom Bailey clean bowls first Nathan Gilchrist, then Navdeep Saini.

Tom Bailey finished with a career-best match haul of 11-110

It earns Lancs only 19 points from their fifth win of the season - but all it does is help the Red Rose keep pace with Surrey and Hampshire at the top.

They are now 18 points behind Hampshire - and will be 34 points behind Surrey, when they complete their victory over relegation-threatened reigning champions Warwickshire shortly.

  7. dropped catch

Dropped catch at Cheltenhampublished at 16:19 British Summer Time 28 July 2022

    Northants 41-1 (target 202) v Glos

It wasn't an easy chance, but you wonder if Marcus Harris might regret failing to hold on at close range as Ryan Rickelton turned one around the corner from Zafar Gohar.

Rickelton is 18 not out, with Will Young on 14 and Northants need another 161 from 30 overs.

Gloucestershire, of course, need nine wickets if they are to achieve that longed-for first win of the season.

  8. wicket

    WICKET - Browne c Overton b Siddle 0published at 16:15 British Summer Time 28 July 2022

    Essex 0-1 v Somerset

Nick Browne is caught at second slip off Peter Siddle.

    How utterly bizarre.

He chewed up 454 balls and stayed at the crease for 10 hours and 36 minutes for his 234 not out in the first innings.

in the second, the double centurion has lasted just five balls.

Maybe he was unsettled by the calming presence of Sir Alastair Cook alongside him.

Cook has so far sat this one out - and Paul Walter came out to open the batting instead, to be joined now by Tom Westley.

  9. 50 runs

for Hashim Amlapublished at 16:12 British Summer Time 28 July 2022

    Surrey 157-2 (target 248) v Warwickshire

Hashim Amla (Surrey)Image source, Getty Images

Hashim Amla goes to his third half-century of the season from 75 balls, pulling Brad Wheal to the boundary as Surrey close in on victory.

Amla's side need just another 91 to reclaim top spot - and plunge Warwickshire deeper into relegation trouble in the process.

  10. Somerset declare at tea intervalpublished at 16:02 British Summer Time 28 July 2022

Essex 505-9 dec, Somerset 605-6 dec

Some gallows humour from the Somerset media department.

Nice touch from the county of the great John Cleese.

WICKET - Overton st sub (Buttleman) b Critchley 7published at 15:56 British Summer Time 28 July 2022

    Essex 505-9 dec, Somerset 605-6

Craig Overton becomes Somerset's sixth wicket - and only the 15th of this dead game - to trigger the tea interval at Chelmsford.

Not long left for this game to be put out of its misery.

Two wickets now for Matt Critchley, to match fellow spinner Simon Harmer.

  13. wicket

WICKETpublished at 15:56 British Summer Time 28 July 2022

    Gay c Bracey b Payne 6 (Northants 9-1, target 202) v Glos

The burning question around Cheltenham over tea was this: would Northamptonshire take this challenge on?

Early indications are that they will have a go - but they've lost a wicket already at the the start of the third over, Emilio Gay wafting David Payne into the wicketkeeper's gloves.

Ryan Rickelton is out there to join Will Young.

  14. 100 runs

Century for James Rewpublished at 15:50 British Summer Time 28 July 2022

    Essex 505-9 dec, Somerset 603-5

Somerset's teenage wicketkeeper James Rew has become the third centurion of their innings, after Matt Renshaw and Tom Banton.

Like Banton's, it is a maiden first-class century. And all three have hit their highest red-ball score for Somerset.

  15. Tea at Old Traffordpublished at 15:44 British Summer Time 28 July 2022

    Lancashire 145 & 436-9 dec, Kent 270 & 115-7

Confirmation that tea has now been taken at Old Trafford, with the fall of the seventh Kent wicket.

Daniel Bell-Drummond looks in total control at the other end on 64 but, essentially, Matt Henry, Navdeep Saini and Nathan Gilchrist now stand between title outsiders Lancs and a fifth Championship victory of the season.

  16. Tea at the Ovalpublished at 15:42 British Summer Time 28 July 2022

    Surrey 146-2 (target 248) v Warwicks

Barring a bizarre turn of fortune in the final session, Surrey look well-placed to secure a win that would take them back into top spot after Hampshire briefly dislodged them this afternoon.

Despite losing Rory Burns for 61, the home side have time very much in their favour, with 37 overs left and eight wickets remaining.

Hashim Amla is 43 not out, with Ollie Pope on 11.

Another Kent wicket as Tom Bailey bags his second wicket in successive overs, getting Grant Stewart caught behind for a duck.

It's a third wicket for Bailey - and a fourth catch for George Lavelle, on the stoke of tea.

    Breaking

    Notts 240 & 301 v Sussex 143 & 142

Dane Paterson finishes Sussex off with the last two wickets to finish with 3-14 and claim a match tally of eight wickets, exactly the same as James Pattinson.

Cheteshwar Pujara was stranded on 46 not out as the Sussex tail collapsed around him, but Notts strengthen their position at the top of Division Two with a comfortable win.

    Lancashire 145 & 436-9 dec, Kent 270 & 115-6

A second wicket for Bailey 10 minutes way from tea.

Two each now for Bailey, New Zealander Will Williams and India international Washington Sundar.
