It has been a fairly gloomy day around the country - both in terms of the mood and the weather.

The shared moments in celebration of the life of Her Majesty The Queen will be most people's abiding memory. But we've seen a fair bit of very good cricket.

Leaders Hampshire certainly won't be too disappointed with how things have gone at Northampton, with their main rivals Surrey being badly held up by Emilio Gay's career-best 145.

Yorkshire skittled by Essex in Leeds - and a great response by Lewis Gregory to four Mohammed Siraj wickets at Edgbaston.

Not to mention Sol Budinger's debut half-century for Leicestershire and two more very entertaining encounters in Division Two at Hove and Lord's.

But the September light had the final word.

Please join us for more tomorrow at 10am - ready for a 10:30 start.

That is officially the end of day one at Lord's.

Fourth-placed Middlesex will resume tomorrow on 132-4, trailing second-placed Glamorgan by 82 runs, but with fifth-wicket pair Mark Stoneman (72) and John Simpson (14) looking solid.

  4. Coach praises 'humble' Cookpublished at 18:11 British Summer Time 12 September 2022

    Yorkshire 134 v Essex

    Sam CookImage source, Rex Features

While it was a team effort for Essex to knock over Yorkshire in just over 50 overs, the highlight of the day was a 200th first-class wicket for Sam Cook.

Cook finished with 3-31 from another impressive bowling display as he continues to demonstrate why he is one of the best on the county circuit with his career average under 20.

That was acknowledged by Essex coach Anthony McGrath.

“Sam’s had a really good season and continues to improve," he told the ECB Reporters' Network.

“He works hard, and the amount of wickets he’s taken is a testament to that. He is getting his rewards.

“He didn’t know about the record until he left the field. It’s great for him, but he just focuses on the team because he is a humble man."

  5. Bad light stops play at Lord'spublished at 18:04 British Summer Time 12 September 2022

    Glamorgan 214, Middlesex 132-4

And off they come at Lord's too. The natural light has faded quickly, umpires David Millns and Mark Newell were in no doubt - and there are no arguments.

Almost certainly, that will be it now.

  6. Close of play at Edgbastonpublished at 18:00 British Summer Time 12 September 2022

    Somerset 182-8 v Warwickshire

That's officially it for the day in Birmingham too.

Back tomorrow, with a limping Lewis Gregory on 60 and Sajid Khan on 31.

  7. Close of play at Northamptonpublished at 17:57 British Summer Time 12 September 2022

    Northants 249-4 v Surrey

As expected, there will be no further play at Northampton and Emilio Gay was out to the final ball of the day.

  8. Still going at Lord'spublished at 17:56 British Summer Time 12 September 2022

    Glamorgan 214, Middlesex 122-4

Only one game still going on now as we await final confirmation of the close of play at Northampton and Edgbaston.

Six overs left at Lord's and, although the light is not great, Mark Stoneman and John Simpson look set and capable of seeing this one out.

The lights are on - and umpires David Millns and Mark Newell seem happy enough and have yet to even consult.

  9. Close of play at Hovepublished at 17:51 British Summer Time 12 September 2022

    Sussex 220 v Worcestershire 87-0

The players are coming off for bad light with Worcestershire's openers still unbeaten.

Stumps are called with six overs still to be bowled.

  10. dropped catch

Dropped catchpublished at 17:42 British Summer Time 12 September 2022

    Sussex 220 v Worcestershire 84-0

Ed Pollock should be walking back to the dressing room, but Tom Alsop has put him down.

It was a sharp chance at first slip off captain Tom Haines, but it should have been taken.

  11. Bad light stops play at Edgbastonpublished at 17:39 British Summer Time 12 September 2022

    Somerset 182-8 (56 overs) v Warwickshire

Lewis Gregory, clearly carrying a mystery injury to his right knee, has found another good partner in Sajid Khan, who has so far hit six boundaries in his 31 out of a 42-run stand.

And Somerset are astonishngly now within 18 runs of a batting point.

But that may well be it for the day now art Edgbaston as umpires Neil Mallender and James Middlebrook were concerrned about the light and have taken the players off.

The light is unlikely to improve in overcast Birmingham, the umpires have taken their readings - and all they are waiting for is official notification of play being over on day one.

  12. Postpublished at 17:34 British Summer Time 12 September 2022

    Sussex 220 v Worcestershire 80-0

Worcestershire openers Ed Pollock and Jake Libby are making good progress at Hove, seeing off 25 overs so far.

A possible 11 more overs this evening.

  13. rain stops play

Now raining in Northamptonpublished at 17:30 British Summer Time 12 September 2022

    Northants 249-4 v Surrey

The covers are now on the pitch because we have some rain at Wantage Road.

  14. 50 runs

Half-century for Mark Stonemanpublished at 17:24 British Summer Time 12 September 2022

    Glamorgan 214, Middlesex 108-4

Good fightback by Glamorgan but Mark Stoneman still stands in their way.

And his response to James Harris's wicket-taking burst is to hit him for a 4-6-3 in the next over, which costs 16 runs.

And that helped Stoneman go to his half-century - the 94th time the former England opener has got to that mark in first-class cricket for Durham, Surrey and Middlesex.

  15. Bad light stops play at Northamptonpublished at 17:22 British Summer Time 12 September 2022

    Northants 249-4 v Surrey

New batter Ricardo Vasconcelos makes it to the middle, but does not face a ball as the umpires takes the players off for bad light.

Emilio Gay could well have been out to the last ball of the day.

If that is the case, Surrey will feel a whole lot happier about things than a few moments ago.

  16. wicket

    WICKET Gay c T Curran b Atkinson 145published at 17:19 British Summer Time 12 September 2022

    Northants 249-4 v Surrey

Emilio Gay's brilliant knock comes to an end.

He takes on the short ball from Gus Atkinson but he is well caught in the deep by Tom Curran.

What a pity when he was five shy off 150, but it was a terrific career-best coming off 189 balls with 17 fours.

His partnership with Rob Keogh was worth 155.

  17. wicket

    Harris on a hat-trick at Lord'spublished at 17:16 British Summer Time 12 September 2022

    Glamorgan 214, Middlesex 92-4

Middlesex old boy James Harris strikes for Glamorgan in successive balls at Lord's, as he removes Pieter Malan and Max Holden.

But John Simpson sees off the hat-trick ball from Harris, who has been rewarded for a fine long spell with three wickets for two runs in nine balls.

15 overs left in the day. And Mark Stoneman is on 47, having watched the drama unfold from the safety of the non-striker's end.

  18. Close of play at Headingleypublished at 17:08 British Summer Time 12 September 2022

Yorkshire 134 all out v Essex

That second bout of rain has brought day one to a premature close in Leeds.

Essex will begin their innings tomorrow.

  19. Postpublished at 17:07 British Summer Time 12 September 2022

    Northants 241-3 v Surrey

Successive boundaries for Rob Keogh off Cameron Steel as he sweeps the leg-spinner.

Then Keogh and Emilio Gay take boundaries off the next over from Jordan Clark.

A bit of head-scratching at the moment for Surrey on how to end this partnership.

It's fair to say their strong Championship position has been built on racking up big runs with the bat rather than scuttling the opposition out with the ball.

  20. Division Two round-uppublished at 17:06 British Summer Time 12 September 2022

Worcestershire openers Ed Pollock and Jake Libby have reached a half-century stand against Sussex at Hove.

An unsually restrained Pollock has made 22 off 48 balls and Jake Libby is also on 22.

Middlesex, meanwhile, have lost another wicket against Glamorgan at Lord's.

After the earlier loss of Sam Robson chasing Glamorgan's first-innings 214, Stephen Eskinazi was caught behind off his former Middlesex team-mate James Harris for 31.

This week's other Division Two game, at Leicester, has been called off for the day.
