Ireland just aren't going to have the depth of an England, India or Australia, and that's where they struggled today.

I can't see England struggling to chase 158.

England will be hoping to come through this difficult assignment before taking on the group minnows on Friday. Here come Jos Buttler and Alex Hales. 158 needed to go two from two.

The entire top tier of the MCG is closed today. It won't be on Friday when we're expecting at least 70,000 for England v Australia.

England bowler Mark Wood: "I didn't think I bowled that well today, to be honest. I struggled a little bit, it was a bit wet and greasy and every ball felt a bit different. I was worried about where I was landing but pleased to get the wickets.

"I'm a bit disappointed by the performance, the first 10 overs we were a bit flat and lacked intensity. Liam Livingstone came on and did really well so I was pleased with that. But 157 seems a good score but we weren't at our best today."

On England's bowling: "We gave them too many four balls. A big stadium, quite empty and we didn't have the intensity of a big crowd. They ran a lot of twos. It's hard to put my finger on it but I didn't think that was our best performance."

On his fitness: "I feel good and I can run in and hit good speeds. I happy with the 157 they've got, happy with the three wickets but I think we could've been better."

That was all quite curious, wasn't it? England were poor for the first 10 and needed Liam Livingstone to get back into it. Ireland will be disappointed they didn't get more runs. England should win it.

I'll leave you with probably the most entertaining bit of action from that first innings, and hand you over to Stephan Shemilt to take you through England's chase.

England will be confident of chasing that, especially as they've taken the momentum into the second innings following Ireland's collapse.

The Irish were cruising at 103-1 and eventually bowled out for 157, so plenty of frustration there.

Three wickets each for Liam Livingstone and Mark Wood, two for Sam Curran, while at the other end of the spectrum Chris Woakes has figures of 0-41 from three overs.

When you are sent in on a pitch with some moisture, 157 is a remarkable effort.

That was a regulation edge. Ireland lost 9-54 in eight overs.

Little c Buttler b Stokes 0 (Ire 157 all out)

Ben Stokes finishes the job for England.

Josh Little fends at one outside the off stump, gets an edge and Buttler does the rest.

A good recovery from England, who would have been a bit twitchy when Ireland were 103-1.

    England need 158 to win.

If Ireland started the day and you told them they would be in this position, they would probably be pretty happy, but they could have got 180.

  12. wicket

    Hand b Curran 1 (Ire 156-9)

Great name, but he doesn't last long as Curran takes his second in the over.

Again the batter tries to give himself some room but Curran doesn't miss. Full, straight and the same result.

It's been a very good finish from England.

McCarthy was trying to access the off side and Curran got it straight.

    McCarthy b Curran 3 (Ire 152-8)

    Full, straight, gone.

Sam Curran continues to do a good job at the death for England. A full yorker cleans up Barry McCarthy, who was trying to give himself some room to hit down the ground.

It's pretty handy from Livingstone. Moeen Ali hasn't bowled a ball and is another option.

  17. Ire 150-7published at 18 overs

    Two overs left, then.

After that start, Ireland will be disappointed to be seven wickets down. But if they can get two big overs here, it will still make it a good score.

Livingstone is having a good little outing. He's got Buttler out of a bit of a hole.

    Adair c Curran b Livingstone 4 (Ire 149-7)

Livingstone has three! He's saved England here.

Mark Adair is the latest batter to get out trying to take on the never-ending square boundaries here at the MCG.

Again it looks like he's connected well, but in fact it's miles short of the ropes and Sam Curran takes a simple catch at mid-wicket.

England shouldn't be happy with this performance. On another day Ireland would've got up to that 180/190 mark. They've been lucky and those last few dismissals were poor. When they come up against bigger teams like Australia and New Zealand it will be interesting to see how they cope.
