Spirit hang on after late Invincibles fightbackpublished at 21:46 British Summer Time 4 August 2022
London Spirit hung on to beat Oval Invincibles by three runs in a thrilling finale which lit up the second night of the men's Hundred.
Needing 48 from the final 15 balls and then 17 from the last five, Invincibles were almost lifted to a remarkable victory by Danny Briggs.
He hit two successive fours to reduce the target to nine from three balls, before Jordan Thompson saw Spirit over the line with some good slower balls and well-executed yorkers, leaving Briggs unbeaten on 29 from 11 balls.
Here's what also happened:
- England white-ball opener Jason Roy saw his summer woes continue as he was out first ball and Invincibles, who were chasing 172 to win, slipped to 12-4.
- Jordan Cox (39 off 30 balls) and Australian Hilton Cartwright (42 off 23) put on 74 for the fifth wicket and Tom Curran smacked 27 off 15 to keep Invincibles in the hunt
- Spirit made 171-6 in their innings, with Eoin Morgan top-scoring with 47 from 29 balls. There were signs of a return to form for the former England white-ball captain as he smashed three lusty blows back down the ground.
- Invincibles' overseas stars were impressive with the ball as Pakistan's Mohammad Hasnain and West Indies' Sunil Narine both claimed two wickets. England's Curran struggled though, conceding 40 runs from his 20 balls.
What's next?
Invincibles will have the chance to bounce back when they travel to Welsh Fire, who lost in the opening game of the tournament, on Sunday. London Spirit will host Manchester Originals at Lord's on Monday night.
