Will Jacks cracked a match-winning 81 as Oval Invincibles picked up their first win of the season and inflicted a second defeat on Welsh Fire.

Jacks hit four sixes and five fours in his 45-ball innings as Invincibles battled up to 158-5 on a tricky pitch in Cardiff.

Fire started well in their chase with Joe Clarke hitting early back-to-back sixes but they then lost regular wickets throughout, finishing on 119-6, to lose by 39 runs.

Here’s what also happened:

• Jason Roy's summer of struggles continued as the England opener was caught at short fine leg for just 10. But, former England batter Kevin Pietersen says people need to "leave Roy" alone and England should stick with him ahead of October's World Cup in Australia.
• Will Jacks patiently built his innings, scoring 21 from his first 18 balls, before increasing the pace and clearing the boundary with frequency as the innings developed.
• Tom Curran removed Clarke, who made 37 from 29 balls, and the dangerous South African David Miller. He also bowled the first maiden of this year's tournament and finished with 2-14
• West Indies spinner Sunil Narine was the pick of the Invincibles bowlers, dismissing Tom Banton, England Test batter Ollie Pope and Fire captain Josh Cobb, to finish with figures of 3-21.

Speaking about Jacks, Invincibles captain Sam Billings said: "His season goes better and better - he is a young player with hugely exciting potential.

"That was a coming of age knock, we know how destructive he can be but that was seriously mature."

What’s next?

Oval Invincibles are next in action against Northern Superchargers on Thursday at the Kia Oval. That game will start at 15:00 BST with the women's competition starting with the same fixture later that evening.

Welsh Fire now have six days off and will host last year's runners-up Birmingham Phoenix in their next Saturday.

The Hundred roadshow rolls on to Lord's tomorrow night when London Spirit aim to make it two wins from two as they take on Manchester Originals, who lost to Northern Superchargers in their opening game.

There are more than a few big-hitters involved in that one - Eoin Morgan, Jos Buttler and Andre Russell, anyone?

Will Jacks speaking to Sky: "We really enjoyed it, we needed to bounce back from the loss and we did it well.

"We realised in the first few balls it (the pitch) lacked pace. We had to take it deep, take the singles and take as few risks as possible.

"You take it five balls at a time and after the time out with 30 left we said it was time to go."

The Invincibles used Narine really cleverly, whenever Fire got a partnership going they kept bringing him back on this dry-ish wicket.

With the result already decided, the game somewhat peters out but it's an impressive performance from the Oval Invincibles.

They win by 40 runs to get themselves going in this year's tournament. For Welsh Fire, it is two defeats from two. They need to turn things around very quickly if they are to make the Eliminator.

If I was giving away a match award I'd give it to Will Jacks right now. He built and built and went deep with is innings.

Zampa does his best to ruin Tom Curran's figures with a boundary, guided fine after he had moved across his stumps.

Still, a magnificent effort from Curran. He ends with 2-14 from his 20 balls.

Zampa gets a bit of luck with two rather less pleasing shots, both hoisted into the leg side.

Jason Roy dives and gets a hand to the first out them but it would be harsh to label it as a drop and the next one was just out of reach.

The game is almost up for the Fire now.

Narine is a difficult man to get underneath, it scooted along and castled him.

Stunning fielding from Rilee Rossouw! He sprints round from long on and makes a brilliant diving stop to deny Cobb a boundary. Even the home fans are applauding that.

That Duckett six helped but the Fire are still right up against it.

Captain Josh Cobb is out there with Duckett. A big next 10 balls and who knows what could happen!?
