Southern Brave win despite Mooney heroicspublished at 17:50 British Summer Time 12 August 2022
Southern Brave opened their Hundred campaign with a six-wicket win over London Spirit, despite Beth Mooney's sublime 97 not out.
Spirit captain Charlie Dean chose to bat first and Mooney's led her side to 155-4.
It looked a competitive score at the halfway stage but England opener Danni Wyatt smashed 65 from 34 balls as Brave made light work of the chase.
Sophia Dunkley saw her side home with a steady 34 not out as they reached their target with six balls to spare.
It was the highest successful chase in the women's Hundred, with last year's runners-up Brave setting out an early warning of their batting power to the rest of the competition.
Here's what else happened:
- Amelia Kerr made 37 from 27 balls in a key partnership of 87 with Mooney.
- Australia leg-spinner Amanda-Jade Wellington took three wickets for Southern Brave.
- Wyatt and India's Smriti Mandhana added 62 for the first wicket in Brave's chase.
- 17-year-old Freya Kemp smashed two sixes in her 14 not out, including one to wrap up victory.
What's next?
London Spirit will be looking to bounce back from defeat as they take on Northern Superchargers, who also lost their first game, at Headingley on Sunday.
Southern Brave play Oval Invincibles on the same day in a repeat of last year's final, with both teams looking to make it two wins from two.
