A clinical bowling display saw Southern Brave make it four wins from four in the Women's Hundred, and inflict a third straight defeat on Welsh Fire.

After being restricted to 122-8, Brave were excellent with the ball and in the field and bowled Fire out for 108 from the penultimate ball to win by 14 runs.

Captain Anya Shrubsole was the pick of the bowlers, taking 3-20, while Lauren Bell also took 2-17.

Scotland international Sarah Bryce offered some late hope with 28 off 21, and left 18 required off the final set of five, but she was run out after turning down a second run.

Sophia Dunkley top-scored for Brave with 49 off 43 balls, while Georgia Adams, who was again used in the middle order, hit two sixes in an enterprising 25 off 16.

Hayley Matthews took 2-26, with both wickets falling in the final set of five balls, as Fire fought back well and restricted Brave.

The win all-but guarantees that Brave will secure one of the top three spots and progress to the knockout stages, while Fire need to win their three remaining games to have any chance.

    Here's what else happened:

    • Alex Hartley bowled superbly to take 1-12 from her 20 balls, while 18-year-old leg-spinner Hannah Baker (1-21) impressed in taking the wicket of Danni Wyatt.
    • Fire dropped four chances in the field, with Lauren Filer shelling two chances in the space of four balls.
    • There were two hat-trick opportunities in the Fire innings. First Shrubsole dismissed Katie George and Filer, but Claire Nicholas defended. Adams then had Nicholas stumped, before trapping Baker lbw, but Hartley was able to work the hat-trick ball for a single.

    What's next?

  2. 'I'm really excited to see where Bell can go'published at 18:02 British Summer Time 22 August 2022

Southern Brave captain Anya Shrubsole on BBC Two: "We thought we were in the game. The batters said it was tricky with the ball on the stumps and the spinners. We knew we'd have to bowl and field really well. I'm really proud of the girls, we clung on in there well and got the win.

"Amanda-Jade Wellington is quite often the trump card and it is about using her when we feel we need wickets and that wicket of Hayley Matthews was huge. She was instrumental in keeping the slip in there and I'm really glad she's in my team.

"Lauren Bell has been working on that delivery, particularly to the left hander, so it is nice to see it working. She is a really outstanding bowler, she has got a lot of attributes that you want. She won't always get it right, we've just got to be patient. I'm really excited to see where she can go."

Southern Brave came out with a purpose. They knew they were defending a low total.

The bowlers took early wickets and kept the pressure on throughout. A really clinical performance.

  4. 'Our bowlers were outstanding'published at 17:59 British Summer Time 22 August 2022

Southern Brave beat Welsh Fire by 14 runs

Southern Brave match hero Sophia Dunkley, who hit 49, to Sky Sports: "I was adamant I was going to go out swinging today, then I hit a couple and realised it wasn't the wicket to do that.

"So I tried to bat through the innings and be positive but try to anchor it a little bit.

"We thought 125 would be a good score so we were happy [with 122].

"It was definitely a tricky pitch, the rain made it a bit skiddy and then it was turning a little bit and it wasn't really true bounce. It was a bit hard but it was a case of getting a score and then the bowlers defending it.

"Danni and Smriti got us off to a really good start and it really took the pressure off us a little bit because they had a really good powerplay and they have done brilliantly for us throughout the competition. I'm really glad they are on my team.

"Our bowlers were outstanding today, read the conditions from ball one really and knew what to do, they should be really proud."

When you are in this sort of competition you want everyone to contribute throughout.

So you had the likes of Georgia Adams and Sophia Dunkley having a good time out in the middle, everyone contributed with the ball and Southern Brave still won.

So that's a really nice place to be as a team.

Nice tidy bit of fielding from Danni Wyatt. She is one of the best fielders on the team.

It was a clean pick up, a throw over the stumps and Anya Shrubsole does the rest.
