Has that not just left the sourest taste in the mouth at the end of this international summer? I'm dumbfounded.

I cannot believe the Indian team felt that was the only way they were going to get a wicket. I don't think Charlie Dean was trying to gain any sort of advantage.

I don't really know how I feel about it because I don't think it's in the spirit of the game. I can't believe it's happened but I can believe it's happened and that it is Deepti Sharma.

She always, always threatens to do it so as a team you'll talk about it. England have got a lot closer than India would have expected and she's actually done it.

I just don't think that's how you should finish an international game. England are going to be absolutely seething.

  3. What is a 'Mankad'?published at 18:11 British Summer Time 24 September 2022

For those who don't know: Mankading is running out the non-striking batter whilst they are backing up, which is when they begin to leave the crease while the bowler is in his final delivery stride.

It is named after former India international Vinoo Mankad, who first ran out a batter in such a fashion during India's 1947/48 tour of Australia.

Deepti Sharma will have seen that as she loaded up, Charlie Dean was in her crease so she's not saying, 'you're trying to steal a run'.

She's saying, 'you've got too close for our comfort and we want to win the match'.

This will feel tremendously sour. I can't tell you what ill feeling this is going to create between the two sides.

The Indian fans are celebrating, but the England fans are booing.

That was bubbling up to a tremendous finish after a wonderful series. But that it is rather a messy end.

Was Charlie Dean really trying to steal a run? Was that the only way India could take the final wicket? I'm not so sure.

We are likely to be talking about that moment for a very long time.

That is given as out and that's the end of the game. Charlie Dean is incandescent, she's thrown her bat and her gloves on the ground.

There will be a dreadful feeling between these two sides. But, I'm afraid the laws of cricket have not been broken.

  8. champagne moment

India get the victory - but it is a controversial one.

Jhulan Goswami is lifted up into the air by her jubilant team-mates in what was her final international appearance, a wonderful moment that feels tarnished somewhat.

There is likely to be a LOT of fallout from that.

What Deepti Sharma did was totally within the rules of the game. But whether it was within the spirit of the game is up for debate.

'Done a Mankad' - Sharma's controversial dismissal of Dean

She has! Would you believe it?!

Charlie Dean has wandered out of her crease at the non-striker's end and Deepti Sharma broke off her delivery stride to whip off her bails.

The umpires have to give her out. It is all within the rules, but what a controversial way to end the game and the series.

Deepti Sharma has done a Mankad. Is that how you want to win a game of cricket? That's entirely up to you. I'm afraid we might be about to have some terrible controversy here.

The India players are suddenly looking concerned. This wasn't in the script.

Deepti Sharma will bowl the 44th over.

And that is what Freya Davies does.

England need 18 from 42 balls.

We are well into low-scoring thriller territory now.
