The opening game of Charlotte Edwards Cup Finals Day sees the two leading scorers in this year's competition on opposing sides.

England's Amy Jones has made 245 runs in six games for Central Sparks, with a highest score of 80 - and at an incredible strike rate of 141.61.

South East Stars opener Aylish Cranstone can't match that, but a rate of 117.60 is not shoddy, and she has also hit three half-centuries in her cumulative total of 235 runs so far.

One thing lacking from this year's competition is a century - there were two in 2021, by Emma Lamb and Sparks' Marie Kelly - and maybe Jones or Cranstone can provide the first in today's opening game.

South East Stars have a 3-1 advantage over Central Sparks in previous Charlotte Edwards Cup meetings.

Bryony Smith's sided won both group-stage games in 2021 - by five wickets at Canterbury, after Sparks were all out for 117, and by 26 runs at Edgbaston, despite 76 off 68 balls by Eve Jones.

Sparks won by 34 runs at Guildford on 18 May after Issy Wong's 45 off 28 balls helped them to a total of 170-6, but back at Edgbaston 11 days later, it was the Stars who prevailed by 10 runs in a rain-affected game, with Aylish Cranstone making an unbeaten 59.

Charlotte Edwards Cup (play starts 12:00)

Charlotte Edwards' hopes of seeing the team she coaches become the first to lift the trophy that bears her name were ended when Southern Vipers lost to Northern Diamonds on Finals Day 12 months ago.

Lauren Winfield-Hill's 65 off 39 balls led Diamonds to a score of 135-6 and Edward's former England team-mate Jenny Gunn then took 4-26 as the Vipers were bowled out for 117 in reply.

Diamonds improved their total in the final against South East Stars as Hollie Armitage's unbeaten 59 off 48 balls saw them to 138-4.

But Bryony Smith and Aylish Cranstone began the chase with a stand of 71 and Alice Capsey's 40 not out saw them home by five wickets on 139-5, with two full overs to spare.

Following the ending of the Women's Super League in 2019, the ECB planned to launch regional competitions in both the 50-over and T20 formats the following year.

Thanks to Covid, only the former, named the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy, went ahead in 2020.

Ahead of the 2021 season, it was announced that the new T20 competition would bear the name of another of England's all-time greats, Charlotte Edwards, who also happens to be the coach of Southern Vipers.

Edwards led the national side to a World Cup double in both formats in 2009 and ECB managing director of women's cricket, Clare Connor, described her as "a true legend of English cricket".
