Alex Hales did not perfectly strike the ball there, but he did what he was trying to do.
Brilliant from Hales. He comes down the pitch and paddles a shot over backward-point for four.
Alex Hales, on 21 off 17, is beaten by two consecutive Rauf slower balls.
The pressure is building on the England opener...
The outfield in Karachi is so, so quick. Phil Salt pulls new bowler Haris Rauf to the ropes with the ball beating two sprinting fielders.

The other option England have at the top of the order is Will Jacks. He can bowl you three or four useful overs of spin. He can open, or bat lower down. Will's great in the field, too and is a versatile cricketer. However, both Phil Salt and Alex Hales are the experienced men who are just ahead of him.
Four overs gone. England have started well.
Hales 20, Salt 10
Dahani is seeing some early success with the slower ball.
Oooh that's an edge. Nothing the keeper can do as Alex Hales flashes a huge edge for four.

After a pretty sedate first over England have really upped the pace. I think as the ball gets softer and starts to turn it will be more difficult so they are looking to make the most of the quicker bowlers and the hard ball.
Hasnain's over finishes with a single.
Pakistan throw the ball to Shahnawaz Dahani for the next set.

A couple of ugly-looking shots from Alex Hales but that's the beauty of batting in the powerplay with the field up.
Here comes Hales.
He flicks a four off his legs before outside-edging a flashy six. It's not classy, but it works.
To be fair though, pace is looking very good right now. Hasnain starts another set with three dots.

I think England will be happy with that second over. I always think it's tricky for spinners to come on and bowl that second over after the batters have had a bit of a look in the first over. The pitch does look dry and it will turn.
Alex Hales is dancing with fire, only just top-edging one safe. Next ball he chips one just short of mid-on. He doesn't look too comfortable at the moment, but things can change quickly.
Launched. First ball, Phil Salt takes on the spin, chipping one over the long-off fielder.
A sign of things to come?
Spinner Mohammad Nawaz will bowl the next over.
The security operation tonight includes police officers on roller blades...
Strong start from Pakistan. Mohammad Hasnain's first over goes for just three runs.

Alex Hales is a consistent player given the expansive brand of cricket he plays, making use of those long levers. Phil Salt is someone who bullies the bowling up front. They are two very exciting guys to watch for England, both in great touch, and it's kind of a shoot out for a World Cup opening spot too.
