Summary

  • Next Test begins in Multan on Friday (05:00 GMT)

  1. Pak 236-5published at 72 overs

Close again! James Anderson twice manages to beat the outside edge of Agha Salman's bat. On another day he would have feathered one of those.

To rub salt in the wounds Anderson is a touch too full and Agha drives away for four.

Frustration for England. Pakistan edging ever closer.

The spinners are going to have to bowl at some stage. There are only three seamers and you can't just bowl them into the ground with two more Tests to come.

Pakistan tail in the first innings added 104 runs after the fall of the sixth wicket. That was mostly against spin but you feel England will largely use pace today.

  5. Pak 230-5published at 71 overs

The reception the England players have received from the Pakistan supporters throughout this Test has been wonderful.

Ben Stokes is now into the 10th over of his spell. He is giving everything to try and force a wicket as he done on so many occasions for England.

Pakistan are holding firm however. They are probably looking to see the seamers off and target the spinners.

  7. Pak 228-5published at 70 overs

A beauty of a delivery from James Anderson just nips off the surface away from Azhar Ali and very nearly snares the edge.

You feel this partnership is the crucial one for Pakistan.

Man of the match has to be Stokes. His approach has made this game an event.

  9. Pak 228-5published at 69 overs

Pakistan need 115 runs to win

Good foot movement from Azhar Ali as he shuffles across his crease and works the ball towards the leg-side boundary and Pakistan run three.

The hosts are edging their way towards their target. They don't need any fireworks to get there. Only a flurry of wickets will change their approach.

  10. Pak 224-5published at 68 overs

    Target 343

Pakistan are taking no risks with James Anderson, just a single off his 16th over of the innings.

Ben Stokes is continuing at the other end.

James Anderson's bowling in this innings: 7% full, 65% good length and 28% short. 16 overs, 7 maidens, went for 22 runs, took 2 wickets with an economy of 1.38.

Azhar is a good person to have at the crease for Pakistan after 90-odd Tests.

I was never someone who could follow cricket, it was a boring sport. But with England's new attitude to the way they play the game I am now hooked. Never thought I would biting my nails on the fifth day of a Test!

Stokes is frustrated with himself. That was a lovely stroke.

  15. Pak 223-5published at 67 overs

Ben Stokes continues after drinks. This is the eighth over of his spell, how long will he stay on for I wonder?

He does find the edge of Agha Salman's bat but it was always going down and it trundles along the ground down to third man for a single.

Stokes is then too full next ball and Azhar Ali drives gloriously through the covers.

    Stokes looks furious with himself.

Pakistan need 120 to win. You can sense the tension and excitement in the crowd.

Ben Stokes' bowling in this innings: 4% full, 46% good length and 49% short. 12 overs, 2 maidens, went for 46 runs, took 1 wickets with an economy of 3.83.

James Anderson's last wicket was his 77th in Asia. Only one pace bowler from outside Asia has taken more - Dale Steyn, who took 92 in 22 Tests.

Declare too 'early' and force a result (which I still back us to get). Or declare too late and guarantee a draw like the last few years? I know which day five I'm tuning in for.

One of the puzzles for Stokes is when will he reintroduce his spinners who have been more expensive.

  19. Pak 217-5published at 66 overs

    Target 343

England are definitely extracting a bit of movement from this previously docile pitch.

Ollie Robinson is also mixing up his length as he goes for the fuller ball again to Azhar Ali, who just manages to get his bat down again and Pakistan run three.

Time for drinks with Pakistan needing 126 runs to win and England needing five wickets.

    Perfectly poised.
