England bowled fantastically well. All three bowlers got the ball in the right areas, asked the questions they needed to with the ball moving around a bit under lights.

Jimmy's spell was obviously the standout but we was very well backed up by the other two.

David Gower said on commentary it was the best he had seen Ben Duckett bat and I would agree.

More from England batter Harry Brook, speaking about the pitch: "It was a little bit slow, a little bit two-paced. I'm happy batting on any pitch but a few of the lads were saying it was two-paced and you could feel that with a couple of the bowlers.

"I definitely think it's going to be easier to bat throughout the day. We got the luck of the draw there but we declared at a good time to bowl as many overs under the lights as possible. It's probably going to be a bit more of a graft tomorrow."

On the declaration:"There was no discussion, we were going to go out there and bat as we usually do. I got out and plans changed. We were always going to change when the two bowlers were in together."

I don't think New Zealand bowled very well at Harry Brook but he doesn't allow people to bowl well. The margin for error is so small, he's so strong through the off side.

I particularly like how still he is at the crease, his head is so still and he can access everywhere in the ground.

New Zealand were pleased to see the back of him because could have done some serious damage.

  6. 'We haven't been told to play like that'published at 08:52 Greenwich Mean Time 16 February 2023

England batter Harry Brook, speaking on BT Sport: "We finished it off nicely there to get three wickets under the lights. That was really good for us going into tomorrow."

On England's batting: "We haven't been told to go out there and play like that, we just try to put as much pressure on the bowlers and put away the bad balls as much as we can. It's filtered out throughout the team."

On his form: "It's good to be back out there with these lads as well, I felt good out there. Unfortunately, I didn't get the hundred but at the end of the day, I got a Test 89 so I'm happy with that."

In isolation those shots don't look great but the fact England batted so quickly means they had 18 overs at New Zealand tonight.

It wasn't all plain sailing for England.

They attacked in a fashion that has become standard now but a succession of batters lost their wickets playing attacking strokes.

Ollie Pope was caught driving to slip for 42, Joe Root taken in the same position playing a reverse scoop off Wagner while Ben Stokes himself smacked a pull straight to mid-wicket.

The last four wickets went for 27 runs too.

  9. 'Incredible day for England'published at 08:44 Greenwich Mean Time 16 February 2023

An incredible day for England. It would have been interesting to see what Ben Stokes would've done at the toss because they've had the best of the conditions all day with how it's worked out.

Take nothing away from England, though, they've had a great day and the way they bowled at the end made it their day.

The two major contributions in England innings came from opener Ben Duckett and number five Harry Brook.

Both looked set for centuries before falling just short.

Duckett crashed around some wayward early bowling to race to 84 from 68 balls inside the first session before he was caught at extra cover.

Brook steered England brilliantly from a slightly perilous position of 209-5 with 89 from 81 balls.

His innings meant England could attack in the final session and declare for a bowl in the ideal floodlit conditions.

  11. 'That's why we love Test cricket'published at 08:38 Greenwich Mean Time 16 February 2023

    Sir Alastair Cook
Former England captain on BT Sport

England just didn't miss, James Anderson was spectacular. Stuart Broad backed him up, probably didn't bowl quite as well as the other two but as a trio they were fantastic.

I think that's why we love Test cricket so much: seeing the way England went about their batting, attacking, where New Zealand just had to soak the pressure up.

    It was compelling stuff.

England were entertaining with the bat, racing to 325-9 in 58.2 overs, but there was a nagging feeling they'd left a few runs out there when Ben Stokes did declare.

A superb performance from James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Ollie Robinson in that final session has ensured the tourists are well on top, however.

  14. Close of play - NZ 37-3published at 18 overs

There is no big finale but England won't mind.

It has emphatically been their day.

  15. NZ 37-3published at 17.4 overs

I'm pretty sure it was Wagner himself you could hear groaning as this one past the bat.

    Two to go...

  16. NZ 37-3published at 17.2 overs

It'll be James Anderson to bowl the last...

The first delivery hoops in to hit Wagner on the pad but it's too high for a serious appeal.

Wagner turns down a single next up, protecting Conway in his role as nightwatchman.

  17. NZ 37-3published at 17 overs

England's fans are showing some good endurance late in the day too. First half of the penultimate over, bowled by Stuart Broad, is played with a backing track of the The Great Escape.

Conway blocks it out to leave Neil Wagner to face the final over.

  18. NZ 37-3published at 16 overs

This is outrageous bowling. Anderson has it on a string. Making Neil Wagner look silly is one thing but this time it's Devon Conway - a man who averages 55 in Tests.

There might be two overs to go in the day.

  19. NZ 33-3published at 15.1 overs

And now James Anderson has just bowled a delivery so good Joe Root is laughing at slip.

Neil Wagner had no chance. He's just lucky he didn't edge it.

There can be no doubt that Anderson is England's best ever cricketer. Can't see this cocktail of longevity and brilliance ever being matched.
