    England are right on it.

The England team were right around Crawley there after his earlier drop.

Neil Wagner has come out as a nightwatchman.

  7. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 13.3 overs

    Nicholls c Crawley b Anderson 4 (NZ 31-3)

Zak Crawley has taken this one and Jimmy Anderson has another!

Just a few overs after spilling a straightforward catch at second slip, Crawley moves well to his right to take an edge off the bat f Henry Nicholls low down.

It's another beauty from Anderson. So tough to play.

  8. NZ 31-2published at 13 overs

    Conway 15, Nicholls 4

Play can go until 08:30 GMT, if you're wondering. Conditions won't be this good for bowling when England come back tomorrow. They may as well get another out now.

If you're only just waking up in the UK, you've missed an action-packed day in the first Test in New Zealand.

England were put in to bat and declared after just 58.2 overs having made 325-9 in Mount Maunganui.

They have since reduced New Zealand to 27-2 after 12 overs.

After opener Ben Duckett scored a superb 84 from 68 deliveries, Harry Brook made a magnificent 89 from 81 balls while Ollie Pope scored 42 and Ben Foakes chipped in with 38.

It was the usual attacking approach from England with Joe Root out for 14 playing a reverse scoop, while Ben Stokes was caught at mid-wicket for 19 on the pull.

Stokes declared once the ninth wicket went down and Ollie Robinson quickly accounted for Tom Latham.

Jimmy Anderson then trapped Kane Williamson lbw, the decision given after a review, for six and has also had Devon Conway dropped at slip by Zak Crawley.

Henry Nicholls is the next to have to haul themselves from the dressing room and face the music.

He starts busily, taking Anderson for two twos.

The replays of 40-year-old Anderson being mobbed, hair-ruffled hugged by his team-mates after that wicket are just lovely.

  12. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 11.2 overs

    Williamson lbw b Anderson 6 (NZ 23-2)

Red, red and..... RED! James Anderson, yet again, delivers with the new ball. It nipped back off the pitch to Kane Williamson and in truth it's very out on the replays.

The ball would have comfortably hit the top of middle and leg. A good delivery and a good review.

  13. Postpublished at 07:59 Greenwich Mean Time 16 February 2023

There's no bat. It has hit Williamson on his knee. Height will be the problem...

  14. England reviewpublished at 11.2 overs

Big appeal from England for lbw against Kane Williamson.

Jimmy Anderson liked it. Umpire Aleem Dar did not.

Ben Stokes is frugal with his reviews but he wants another look at this one.

  15. NZ 23-1published at 11 overs

    Conway 11, Williamson 6

Hands in the slips go up in the air like some sort of strange synchronised dance as Conway defends uncomfortably to Robinson.

Captain Ben Stokes is still attacking. There are four waiting there for the catch.

  16. NZ 21-1published at 10 overs

    Trail by 304

Crawley had a horrible time with the bat earlier - getting dropped, bowled off a no-ball and caught all within 14 balls - and that was not good either.

James Anderson found Devon Conway's edge. The ball zipped to the slips but, without having to move an inch, Crawley put the catch down.

  17. dropped catch

    It should be two!

Zak Crawley puts down an absolute sitter at second slip.

It's a switch of ends for Jimmy Anderson. He replaces Stuart Broad.

Basically you need to stay up all night with us tonight, Ruth. You never know what's going to happen with Bazball.

An lbw appeal from Ollie Robinson is turned down at the end of his third over.

Can't believe that whilst I've been in the Land of Nod, England have declared their first innings. They clearly mean business!!
