    Brook 11, Stokes 4

The clouds over the back of the ground don't look too clever, folks.

An over of 'proper' Test cricket, just two singles from it.

He's done it before, Ian. But I'm not sure I'd be moving him myself, and it's not like the openers particularly hold back in this side either.

Ian Unsworth: I think Joe Root should open the batting in this team. He's trying too hard to conform to Bazball and it doesn't suit him. Open the batting, play his natural game and bat for long periods.

  4. Eng 165-4published at 30 overs

A little short and a fraction wide from Wagner. Harry Brook doesn't need a second invitation to throw the bat at it.

It's probably a touch too close to him for the cut shot but there is enough on the outside edge to take the ball over slip for four.

Andy: Have I just seen Root reverse ramp to slip or do I need to go back to sleep?

In isolation, the Root dismissal clearly looks awful, about as bad as it can get for arguably the greatest England player to ever take back the blade. The rest have been culpable, too.

But we can't revel in the nine thrilling wins from 10 Tests without accepting the risk that comes with England's style of play. Is there a happy medium? Maybe, but England will always say the way to face any challenge is to go even harder.

  7. Eng 161-4published at 29 overs

Just a couple from Southee's over. Ben Stokes seems to be, erm, trying to play himself in...?

My wife has a bad cough so is keeping me awake. Decided to take a peek at the match live - switched on to Pope’s dismissal, now Root’s. Turned it off - I’m less of a jinx just reading the BBC feed.

Given how this session has started, New Zealand will be hoping that those rain clouds stay away.

It was a bottom edge from Root as he tried his extravagant, but usually so trusty, shot over the slips.

Meanwhile, Brook drills an uppish drive through the covers. In the air but in the gap for four.

That rain in the distance is heavier. Visibility of the mountains beyond the far end of the ground is receding.

  11. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 27.2 overs

    Root c Mitchell b Wagner 14 (Eng 154-4)

Oh dear. Joe Root tries the reverse scoop again but this time he doesn't get all of it and Daryl Mitchell dives to his right to take a very good catch at slip.

Neil Wagner has a wicket to help improve his mood after a very tricky start to this match.

New Zealand suddenly have the momentum.

  12. Eng 154-3published at 27 overs

Harry Brook is in at five for England and he's off the mark immediately with two clipped backward of square.

  13. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 26.5 overs

    Pope c Latham b Southee 42 (Eng 152-3)

Edged and gone! Ollie Pope had looked in complete control but he is tempted into a loose drive and Tim Southee has his second wicket.

After a few dots, Pope tried to drill the ball through the cover but Southee finds the edge and Tom Latham takes a sharp catch at second slip.

Nice start for the Black Caps after the tea break.

  14. Eng 148-2published at 26 overs

After another no-ball, Wagner opts for change of angle.

The left-armer goes around the wicket to Pope, who promptly skips down and flicks the ball through mid-wicket for four. Absolutely dismissive stuff.

There's something quite surreal about watching a Root revvy scoop at 03:30am, it makes me think am I actually on this planet or is this now Brendon McCullum's world in which we all live?

    Thank goodness for that.

I thought I was going to have to bring you the news of the day's first maiden but Ollie Pope prevents such a travesty by whipping the last ball of Tim Southee's over for a single to deep square leg.

Ok so he wasn't captain yet but I met Freddie Flintoff in a 7-Eleven in Brisbane on the evening of day 1 of the first Ashes Test in 2002. Nasser had won the toss about 10 hours earlier....

  18. Eng 139-2published at 24 overs

Yeah, Joe Root is absolutely fine! A couple of balls to get set and then he's quickly into position to reverse sweep/scoop over the slips for four.

He's pretty much mastered that shot it seems - the only surprise is that this one didn't go all the way for six.

  19. Postpublished at 03:30 Greenwich Mean Time 16 February 2023

Right, we're good to go again. Joe Root is still blinking a little but is happy to continue.

While Joe Root sorted out his eye, a spectator in only his underpants tried his luck with a pitch invasion. Awful idea. In a country full of rugby players he took a monster hit from a security guard. An absolute bone-rattler. I don't think anyone else will think about going on to the pitch.
