It has taken 11 deliveries but England have their first run of the session as Foakes clips Scott Kuggeleijn through square leg for one.

A sedate start to the session.

Ben Stokes hasn't batted as low as this in a Test since 2015 against Pakistan in Sharjah, when he was 10 in one innings and 11 in the next because of a shoulder injury.

  3. Eng 237-6published at 42 overs

    Lead by 256

Who'd have thunk it, a wicket maiden! Ben Stokes defends and leaves his way through the five balls left in the over Michael Bracewell started before the break.

Does that indicate a more restrained England approach in this session?

As Sir Alastair says, England will certainly be thinking of the positives as Ben Stokes joins Ben Foakes in the middle.

However, New Zealand will be too. As exciting as it was to see England score 158 runs in the first session, those four wickets mean the game is still right in the balance.

England have committed to this style. So while we might think if it goes wrong in this next half hour, this is what we could end up with, they won't be thinking that at all.

They'll be thinking 'if it goes right in this next half hour, we could have that extra 80 or 90 runs and a 350 lead which will take some chasing.'

But it's still a very good wicket, the ball is not doing that much so anything is chaseable.

Thanks, Matt. You can't say we don't cater for everyone - we've gone from new-born babies last night to clubbing tonight.

Anyway, over in Mount Maunganui, we've got another intriguing session of Test cricket coming up.

New Zealand have found ways to get wickets and it's kept them close to England in terms of where the game is going.

It looked at one stage as if England were getting away from them but they've certainly brought it back.

Blair Tickner came on and bowled a good spell and that's a big wicket right at the end of the session as well.

I love watching it, it's absolutely fantastic viewing, it's so exciting and refreshing. This is how England have said they're going to play.

But the game is exactly the same as it's been the last two and half days, as soon as one side gets ahead, the other somehow find a way - whether it is due to bad batting or whatever.

It's setting up one hell of a Test match.

Root is absolutely fuming, he threw his bat into a cartwheel as he left the pitch. There was a ton on offer there.

    That is tea.

158 runs and four wickets in 25.1 overs.

    Remarkable.

    Root c Mitchell b Bracewell 57 (Eng 237-6)

On the stroke of the break!

Joe Root is out reverse sweeping for the second time in the match. He has got a top-edge on a ball from spinner Michael Bracewell and the ball has looped to slip via a deflection off the keeper's gloves.

That brings New Zealand back into things a little.

Joe Root is just cruising now. A two here, a single there. They will squeeze in one more over.

It's possible, I guess. Ben Foakes could build a bit more of a platform and allow Stokes to come in and smash it later.

We'll have one, maybe two, more overs before tea.

Arjun Singh: I think Stokes wants us to bat through another session. So he’s saving himself for the end of the next session to come in and bang it around before declaring. We’ve scored very quickly, but also lost three wickets which has hurt the cause slightly.

Trust me, Rob. I have shouted at my screen more than once when we receive those messages.

The New Zealand bowling has improved since Blair Tickner came on.
