Stokes st Blundell b Bracewell 31 (Eng 293-7)

Beaten in the flight and stumped.

Tossed up by Michael Bracewell and Ben Stokes was on the charge, didn't get to the pitch and the ball turns to beat the bat.

Stokes doesn't even bother to try and get back as Tom Blundell takes off the bails.

Take it up with Stephan, Sam...

Although, I tend to agree with him. Not so much playing badly but they've not executed as well as they have in previous games. They've left a lot of runs out there.

Perhaps I'm a BazBall convert - but I don't see how this can be defined as not playing that well. Multiple scores over 50. Exploiting bowlers before they can get comfortable. Seems pretty good to me...

A controlled pull shot from Foakes finds the gap behind square and that takes England's lead past 300.

The milestones keep coming as Stokes' single brings up the fifty partnership from 58 balls. That's England being more measured...

Chicken Fryed Dyche: I do wonder with England's brand of cricket pushing the game forward so quickly will mean 4th innings chases will be higher & more probable because day 3/4 pitches won't have deteriorated.

  7. Eng 278-6published at 50 overs

    Foakes 22, Stokes 23

Is this Bazball or just smart cricket? (Is there even a difference?) Ben Foakes is getting himself in a tangle trying to defend Bracewell so goes on the attack, skipping down and hitting over the leg side for four.

Big appeal to end the over. Stokes is well across his stumps to try and sweep and is hit in front. Given not out and Tim Southee gestures to say there was some bat on it.

    And there was. Good call.

What is it with New Zealand fielders and stepping on the boundary after catching Ben Stokes?

  9. 6 runs

    Eng 273-6published at 48.4 overs

    Lead by 292

That's number 109 for Stokes but it really should be out!

Another short ball, another pull shot and this time it is down the throat of the fielder at fine leg.

However, Wagner stands on the boundary cushion! Six more.

  10. Most sixes in Testspublished at 03:55 Greenwich Mean Time 18 February 2023

    2. Brendon McCullum (NZ) - 107

A record-breaking six for Ben Stokes! He swings Kuggeleijn away over fine leg and has now hit more sixes than anyone else in Test cricket.

Going past... Brendon McCullum, who applauds from the balcony.

If England win this they'll have done so without playing that well.

Ben Stokes has been far more patient than usual so far in this innings but briefly forgets himself. He attempts a big slog sweep but misses, bringing some audible excitement from the Kiwi fielders.

Quite a scrum to get an autograph from Michael Bracewell. Is there any other sport where players sign stuff while they are actually playing?

  15. Eng 257-6published at 47 overs

    Lead by 276

Good over from Kuggeleijn and he is unfortunate to have four runs go against his figures as the ball hits Foakes' heel and runs away to the boundary.

Runs rather than leg byes are given as the ball reaches the fence just in front of a man wearing the intriguing combination of a builders helmet and a bikini top.

Bracewell sends the ball clattering into Foakes' stumps... but only after the England batter had pulled away late. Dead ball.

England are treating the off-spinner with plenty of respect so far in this session.

The benefit of batting for a longer period of time is not just to extend the lead further but it also gives them more chance of having a relatively new ball to bowl with under the lights.

  18. Eng 250-6published at 45 overs

    Lead by 269

After 12 balls without a run, Stokes is off the mark with a boundary.

Dug in short by Kuggeleijn and Stokes guides the pull shot behind square with excellent timing.

Four more to end the over! Down the track but then adjusting to angle the ball past gully. Lovely shot.

  19. Eng 241-6published at 44 overs

    Lead by 260

Bracewell continues and gets through another tidy over.

Foakes tickles the ball around the corner for three and Stokes blocks for the remainder of the over.

The England skipper has faced 10 balls and is yet to get off the mark.

We will live and die by the sword with BazBall. But getting out with a reverse sweep in the over before the break is still very frustrating!
