Approximately 13 hours from now there's the small matter of a World Cup final as Australia face hosts South Africa in the Women's T20 final.

Australia will be playing in their seventh final having won five of them already. Meanwhile, the hosts are in alien territory, as South Africa prepare for their first ever World Cup final in their history of both men's or women's cricket.

The Proteas, you may recall, claimed a surprise win over a highly-fancied England team in the semis to reach their maiden final. Can they upset the Aussies?

Our colleague Ffion Wynne is out in Cape Town to cover the final. You can read her special preview piece on the match here...

    Thanks, Sam.

That was an attritional period of play just before lunch. Perhaps this isn't going to be the easy day we all hoped for?

Anyway, something to mark your card on for tomorrow...

A session of two very distinct halves. The first was all crash, bang, wallop as Tim Southee smashed the ball to all parts before Stuart Broad ensured England could enforce the follow-on.

Since then, it has been much more traditional Test cricket. Tom Latham and Devon Conway have been tested by the England attack but they've battled through the new ball to get to lunch.

To look back at the session and take you through the next one, it's over to Timothy Abraham.

England have been disciplined, but New Zealand have been disciplined in reply. Probably the kind of discipline they should have showed in the first innings.

The end of the session and New Zealand's openers have kept England at bay so far, having been asked to follow-on.

The tourists are still in a dominant position but they are being made to work for it, as you'd expect.

Time for one more over before lunch. Robinson will bowl it.

  10. NZ 38-0published at 18 overs

So close! Slip, leg slip and short leg in play, Leach bowls a good full length and Conway flicks it around the corner.

Stokes is in very close at leg slip and it goes quickly, just to his left and he can't get a hand to it. Nearly for England.

  11. NZ 32-0published at 17 overs

Both Stokes and Anderson have to get their whites dirty to make stops and help Robinson complete another maiden.

You can see just how damp it must be by how much mud they both got caked on them by diving.

Which reminds me, the English club season is only a couple of months away...

Rachel, surely Stokes' knock at Headingley? One of the all-time greatest knocks of modern times.

Only a couple of singles from it but Leach doesn't quite find his length in this over. All a bit too comfortable for the New Zealand openers.

  14. NZ 30-0published at 15 overs

    Latham 22, Conway 8

New Zealand have got through 15 overs without losing a wicket but it has certainly not been easy for them.

Pope is in the game again, behind square at a deep short leg position, and Conway's flick is not far away from him at all.

Another good over from Robinson. We've got just over 10 minutes until lunch.

In reply to Rachel's request for cricketing marvels...of course Beefy's 181 at Headingley with Bob Willis taking eight wickets ...the 2015 Edgbaston Ashes Test when Jimmy got injured and Steven Finn came in and got seven wickets. But it has to be 2005 and the Edgbaston Ashes Test where England won so dramatically!

Good first over from Leach and his last ball turns into Conway, gets an inside edge onto pad and loops out.

Frustratingly for England, Pope is stationed behind square at bat-pad, the ball went in front.

  17. NZ 27-0published at 13.2 overs

The suggestion is that Leach is only bowling this early as the seamers are not happy with how soft the run-ups are at that end.

The spinner comes as close as anyone to getting Latham second ball, though, flicked off the hip and only just out of Ollie Pope's reach at short leg.

  18. Postpublished at 23:41 Greenwich Mean Time 25 February 2023

Seam hasn't been able to break this opening stand so Stokes turns to Jack Leach for the first time in the innings.

  19. NZ 27-0published at 13 overs

Good job Stokes didn't review for that caught behind shout - we've just seen a replay and Conway missed it by miles!

Robinson beats the left-hander again now ball before the batters exchange singles.

This pitch might be slowly flattening out but it's still doing plenty to assist the bowlers right now.

  20. NZ 25-0published at 12.3 overs

Ollie Robinson is back into the attack and gets one to nip and really bounce to beat Conway's outside edge.

Good ball and Ben Stokes thinks there was an edge. He looks around for support but there is none forthcoming. A shrug of the shoulders and no review.
