Well, that's all from us here for the day. We'll be back on Saturday for the second ODI in Sydney, which starts at the lovely time of 3:20 GMT.

For now, you can read my colleague Callum Matthews' match report of today's play, while we all go and catch up on some sleep.

    Bye for now!

  2. 'We were 30-40 runs short'published at 11:34 Greenwich Mean Time 17 November 2022

Player of the match, England's Dawid Malan: "To get to the T20 World Cup final and be ruled out was gutting, so to come here, prove my fitness and score a hundred was extremely satisfying.

"The pitch did a little bit early on, they bowled really well with the new ball. We just didn't seem to get the same movement, it also got a bit dewy later on and we were probably 30 or 40 runs short, if we're being honest.

"I think it's always important to score runs. I think 50 overs is probably my strongest format but it's hard to get into the team with how guys have performed the last couple of years.

"But if I keep doing what I'm doing, I might be part of that squad."

On his bowling: "I was going to come on a little bit earlier but then Alex Carey came in and I didn't fancy bowling to that short boundary!"

  3. 'We are still a very good team'published at 11:32 Greenwich Mean Time 17 November 2022

Australia captain Pat Cummins on Test Match Special: "It was a magnificent innings from Dawid Malan, he just kept ticking over and targeted the short boundary, he was class.

"They did well to get to that score from their position but we bowled really well. It was a good wicket all the way through really, though there was a bit of seam movement early on.

"England are always a strong team and it's nice for us to get back out there and make amends, remind ourselves we are still a very good team despite being disappointed in the T20 World Cup.

"Travis Head played brilliantly, it's nice to see his bravery in a new position more than anyone else. It was pleasing to see him taking the game on that way.

"Steve Smith is a class act, to have him at number three is such a luxury for us and that's hopefully a good sign for us for the summer."

Dawid Malan was out and out better than anyone else on the pitch. He just didn't have anyone to support him.

Yes, Australia put in an all-round performance but it was such a fantastic innings and he deserved to be player of the match.

  5. 'Opening partnership is working well'published at 11:27 Greenwich Mean Time 17 November 2022

Australia batter Travis Head, speaking to BT Sport: "It's nice, getting back into it. A bit of pressure the last month for a lot of the guys so it was nice to come out and play well."

On replacing Aaron Finch: "It was pretty easy batting with Davey [Warner], he got off to a flyer. We were able to ride our luck a bit, it's nice to contribute to a win.

"He puts pressure on the bowlers and if he's doing that then hopefully there are a few loose balls at the other end. The partnership is working well and it's nice to get away first up. Hopefully we can do it again."

On Steve Smith: "He was pretty happy with his work, wasn't he? He worked hard the last three or four days and moved really, really well."

That's a proper flogging today. 287 wasn't really going to be enough and the way that Travis Head came out to open with David Warner, they put the English attack to the sword. England weren't in the contest.

Dawid Malan was the only batter to really stand up for England, his 134 allowing them to reach 288. But the loss of regular wickets throughout the innings pegged them back, with Pat Cummins and Adam Zampa taking three wickets each.

David Warner and Travis Head kickstarted the chase with an opening stand of 147, but after that they really did drag it out, with England's inexperienced bowlers toiling hard.

You do need to give a bit of leeway for England's performance because they've had a pretty big week.

What a way to finish. Smith shakes hands with Jos Buttler and the Aussies take down whatever is left of the T20 World Cup champions.

  10. Australia win by six wicketspublished at 46.4 overs

Steve Smith finishes it with a four and a six! Australia take a 1-0 lead in the ODI series.

Comfortable victory in the end for the Aussies, and Smith finishes with an unbeaten 80.

  11. Aus 281-4published at 46.2 overs

    Need 7 to win

Dawid Malan offers an absolute pie but Steve Smith can only smash it back to hit Cameron Green in the leg.

    Great cricket all round.

Green has been threatening to play his shot for a long time. He's tried it a few times in this innings and this is the first one he's got. A really good shot.

  13. Aus 281-4published at 46 overs

    Need 7 to win

Just started ranting about why on earth Cameron Green was leaving the ball (still a valid question) but he finishes the over with a crunching pull shot for four.

Luke Wood's debut ODI spell comes to an end, wicketless and conceding 59.

Malan is not really giving it a vicious rip, is he?

  15. Aus 274-4published at 45 overs

    Need 14 to win

Even an over of Dawid Malan's wonderful leg-spin is underwhelming. Just two singles from it.

Scrap that. The game has all of a sudden come to life because DAWID MALAN IS BOWLING.

  17. Aus 272-4published at 44 overs

    Need 16 to win

It honestly feels like this game has been going on for three days.

He's the standout performer but he won't get it. They never give it to a player on the losing side.

Without Dawid Malan, this game would have been done hours ago. He has to get player of the match, surely?

  20. Aus 267-4published at 43 overs

    Need 23 to win

Finally Cameron Green gets a move on, helping himself to two boundaries from Liam Dawson's over.

He finishes his spell with 1-65.

Liam Dawson's bowling: 7% full, 93% good length and 0% short. 10 overs, 0 maidens, went for 65 runs, took 1 wickets with an economy of 6.50.
