  2. 'It was a complete team effort'published at 20:31 Greenwich Mean Time 17 February 2023

West Indies captain Hayley Matthews: "Massively tense. With the batting we knew someone would have to take it deep. It was a good effort in the end that we were able to get to the total.

"We probably felt we gave a bit too much width with the ball. Kudos to Karishma Ramharack and her bowling, we were able to pull it back.

"When there's so much happening you can lose your mind a bit. It was a complete team effort to chase it.

"To get the first win in the World Cup its really good. The girls would've had conversations about England and India and hopefully we can carry this momentum going forward with Pakistan.

"We're going through a transitioning phase and it's great to see the youngsters coming through. These are the times that will show us how we are as a team and we have to stick together through the wins and losses."

  4. 'The best is yet to come'published at 20:25 Greenwich Mean Time 17 February 2023

Ireland captain Laura Delany: "We were pretty relaxed, but that might not have shown in our fielding. We batted with great intent but we will reflect on our last five overs. Our fielding wasn't the best and if you give the best players in the world chances they can take games away from you.

"There will have been nerves in the field because it is a lot of the girls' first World Cups, but we've practiced better than that.

"We were probably around 30 runs short. Orla [Prendergast] is so confident at the moment and really enjoying her time out there.

"It is a tough one. We've got a really young side, and there will definitely be nerves there, and would have been in the second innings, but we know we're definitely better than that. The best is yet to come."

  6. 'We knew we needed someone to bat through'published at 20:20 Greenwich Mean Time 17 February 2023

Player of the match, West Indies opener Hayley Matthews: "I am the captain and one of the leaders in the batting line-up, we needed someone at the top to bat through the innings and I took that role on today.

"There was definitely a lot of pressure. We knew it was a score where we'd need someone to bat deep. Kudos to the Irish girls, they bowled well and bowled in some good areas. I am really proud of the girls and teams too.

"I probably have to take more responsibility [as the captain]. Over the last couple of weeks and games it has been helping me to bat deeper. It is a new role but it has helped me a lot so far."

We've talked about the depth of Irish cricket but today I think the depth of West Indies cricket was badly exposed as well. The reliance they have on Hayley Matthews in this side is really concerning. If Ireland had played just a little bit better they would have won that game.

What a game of cricket that was. We wanted a thriller and that was a thriller. I think Ireland will be kicking themselves. They could have and should have won this game of cricket.

An innings of sublime brilliance from the captain, Hayley Matthews. Without her they would have been dead and buried.

Well played Gajnabi. She can see what Ireland are doing and she was a bit put out by that. A clever quality shot.
