Some days England opener Zak Crawley looks like a million dollars and today was one of them as he hit a superb 170 against Kent.

But even that was 19 fewer than Keaton Jennings managed for Lancashire at Taunton before retiring because of a hamstring injury.

Elsewhere, Hampshire wrapped up a three-day win at Northampton and Yorkshire are only 63 runs away from victory over Sussex, if weather permits.

We'll be back with you tomorrow for the final day's play in six matches. See you then.

Notts take a lead of 248 into the final day, but with that late dismissal, all three results are possible.

    Clarke lbw b Higgins 52 (Middlesex 274 v Notts 364 & 158-6)

Gone off the penultimate ball of the day!

Would you believe it? Ryan Higgins has struck Joe Clarke on the pads and the finger goes up.

And that is that for today's play.

  5. 50 runs

for Joe Clarkepublished at 19:11 British Summer Time 22 April 2023

    Middlesex 274 v Notts 364 & 158-5

Joe Clarke edges one off Ryan Higgins but with no slips, it races away to the boundary for four.

And that's enough to bring up his 50 - a first of the summer - and a good effort when Notts were wobbling a bit.

A lovely late cut from Steven Mullaney brings four for the Notts captain and takes him into double figures.

Their lead is 242, so Mullaney will have a very good idea of what will be a good point to declare this second innings.

  9. Close of play at Hovepublished at 18:59 British Summer Time 22 April 2023

    Yorks 138-3 (Target 201)

    Aw, pity.

Certainly looks gloomy here at Hove and the umpires have led the players off the field.

The forecast is not particularly cricket-friendly tomorrow.

But Yorkshire are firm favourites and will only need around an hour of play to get another 63 runs.

Crucial knocks from Lyth (69*) and Hope (53*) after the visitors crashed to 39-3.

Don't forget that 10th wicket stand of 59 between Edwards and Coad in the Yorkshire first innings. Vital.

  10. Postpublished at 18:55 British Summer Time 22 April 2023

    Yorks 138-3 (Target 201)

McAndrew is bowling a good line to Hope - who plays late and drops the ball out safely on the off side.

An aborted drive off the fifth ball and the ball is jabbed down into the ground off a thick inside edge.

    Maiden over.

    Middlesex 274 v Notts 364 & 146-5

What a setting Lord's is for cricket as the sun sets on a lovely spring evening.

There is very much a feeling of playing for tomorrow about proceedings right now as we are five overs from the finish.

  12. Postpublished at 18:51 British Summer Time 22 April 2023

    Yorks 138-3 (Target 201)

It's getting a bit gloomy at Hove. We should get through the scheduled overs - but extra time looks unlikely.

Shot! Lyth hangs back and laces Robinson through point for four runs. Great touch from the opener.

Two more drilled through extra cover off the back foot after a slight mis-field at deep cover point.

Nathan McAndrew has been warming up and he'll be in the attack for the next over.

  13. Postpublished at 18:46 British Summer Time 22 April 2023

    Yorks 132-3 (Target 201)

Hope drops the ball past the feet of Clark and runs a single to square leg.

Lyth nudges Carson into mid wicket for one - and he'll keep the strike.

  14. Postpublished at 18:44 British Summer Time 22 April 2023

    Yorks 129-3 (Target 201)

Robinson is back and there's a let off for Shai Hope who gets a faint edge - and the ball just evades keeper and first slip for a single.

The run rate is academic. 72 to win.

If Yorkshire get there it will be their first Championship win since beating Gloucestershire in April last season.

Five scheduled overs left tonight. And the potential extra half hour?

Mullaney is struck on the pad by Higgins... not out.

Just outside the line. Looked closer live than it did on the replay.

504 runs scored, 11 wickets taken, terrific day three.

Superb centuries by Tom Westley and Nick Browne for Essex, a majestic 170 by Zak Crawley to top the lot.

Even so, Essex hit back strongly in the final session. Simon Harmer took four wickets as Kent closed on 342-7.

Hope drives Hudson-Prentice through cover for two to reach the landmark.

A 15th first-class half century to go with nine 100s, two of which he famously scored for West Indies against England in the Headingley Test of 2017.

    James b Higgins 20 (Middlesex 274 v Notts 364 & 133-5)

Ryan Higgins is on and gets movement down the slope straight away.

A slow handclap among a few spectators is picked up on the commentary mic.

    Bowled him!

Lyndon James is back and across, bowled behind his legs trying to force the ball away square.

Time for Notts captain Steven Mullaney to have a bat.

  20. Postpublished at 18:28 British Summer Time 22 April 2023

    Yorks 119-3 (Target 201)

Tight line from Hudson-Prentice and Lyth can't drive the ball away.

But he gets hold of the last ball and pushes it to long off for a single.
